My Isuzu just bit it...

Not the red car my green 98 Cav Z24 daily driver... just rolled 217,000 km's. It's definitely not the original engine, might be the original transmission though. I've only had the car for a year... only put 12,000 kms on it too. I was having issues shifting into third and fourth... when I left off the clutch and gave it gas, it would have a nasty lurch.... thought it was slipping, but it was only happening once in a while, and only third and fourth... and only when I first gave it gas. Even then, it was only maybe once a day.. if that... driving it hard or going easy on it didn't seem to make a difference in when it occurred either. Very strange...

Anyway... I changed the oil two days ago... then figured I'd try bleeding the clutch and see if that helped any. Well... it killed the clutch master cylinder.... can't bleed it at all, it won't move any fluid backwards or forwards.. it's screwed, and good. Even removing the bleeder screw and pumping the clutch pedal by hand, no fluid comes out anymore.... at all. It did at first... but not anymore. Oh well....

Now Isuzu transmissions are pretty expensive up here... a good one, if you can find it, goes for ~$1200... same with a good running 2.4L... so here's what I figure... sell the running 2.4L.... use the $$$ to buy a 03-05 2.2L Ecotec with Getrag transmission... do the whole swap in my garage.... maybe take me a couple weeks, tops... probably have to add the wiring for ABS, cruise, etc... as most Ecos up here don't even have A/C on them, nevertheless any other options. I can get a whole "swap package" with engine, trans, axles, rad, wiring (everything!!) for $800 cash...

Comments...?

Yeah joh no sense buying another @!#$ty isuzu when you could have a better performing and stronger drivetrain for $400 less.

do an eco and getrag swap you will not regret it. I love my new eco. i got my swap from a junk yard for less than a low milage 2.4.
Z yaaaa sorry dude the 2.4 is a dying engine becuase they like to killl them selves plus the isuzus in older cav's where straight up @!#$. the 2.4 is good if you want to build it but as a reliable daily driver even with routiene matience it's a fish out of water,.
my z was well maintained by me and it was completely stock synthetic every 3000 miles and it still ended up biting me in the ass.

Yup... going for it.

The whole 2.4L vs Eco isn't anything to do with it... I'm not modding this car, it's just my daily driver.... the only thing why I'm going w/ the Eco vs. just sticking with a 2.4L Getrag? Age... my 2.4L is in fine shape, but I'm sure it's got more than 60,000 km's on it. For $800, I get a 60k engine AND transmission.. it's just good sense. I don't think there are many 60k 2.4L's out there...

Cool, good to know... cuz the axles that came with it are non-ABS... and I plan on making the ABS keep working....

It ended up being the slave cylinder... master moves fluid fine, but the slave is jammed. I'll be taking the trans to a shop to see if it's in rebuildable shape so I can make some $$$ back on this. I couldn't borrow a cherry picker, so I finally broke down and bought one... wife is NOT happy

I'm going with 00 Sunfire body harness, 00 Cavalier dash harness and 04 Cavalier engine harness. Will figure out how to mate the headlight connector for the 98 headlights... swapping to a Sunfire cluster and electronics (Monsoon radio! ha ha...), 00 Cavalier dash..

Pics soon.. not that it's anything exciting...
