02 5 speed, occasionnally won't go into gear

This problem is intermittent but I want to catch it before it's permanent.
Here's what happens:
Out of routine, she presses down the clutch, puts the car in neutral, starts the car. Now she can't get the car back into any gear. It doesn't grind, it just won't let you into a gear. If I push a little harder, the car will edge forward an inch but no more, and it will still not go into gear.

So to get it going, shut the car off; put into 1st (because it shifts fine without the engine running); start the car. There is a brief hesitation, a brief clutch smell but everything is back to normal. Shifts fine and the clutch is not smoking.

I searched but couldn't find an identical situation so I'm hoping someone else has experienced the same thing.

Thanks
