Junkyard Trans?

Hey --

I lost 3rd and 4th today on my Cav.

I cant have my car be down for more than a couple days (driving my bronco 120 miles/day isnt an option for too long @ 8mpg).

Rather than have a shop diagnose the problem, I want to replace the trans with a used one.

What is everyones input as far as junkyard transmissions? I can get one with 66k miles on it for $350.

I havent done any research for this, but im going to look and see if theres a way to get any performance parts for the f23 at all, and possibly build a trans if possible.

I think a 'yard trans will last me (if not forever) long enough till I can afford a decent rebuild.

Just looking for some insurance that my plan is a good idea, along with a new (spec2) clutch, and solid mounts front and back).

Any input is greatly appreciated, thankyou!

*sorry if this is long-winded, I have had one hell of a day already **

On the shifting fork there is plastic tips. Sound like they may have came off. We have had these problem before. I end up brazing them, milled and file fit them in. They hold up very well.

How easy of a job is this?

I also fear there might be other problems with the trans, I am getting new clutch and mount reguardless.

However, sometimes it is hard to get into first, I have always had to go 2nd, then first, never could go from a stop in neutral right to first. This happens with reverse as well, tho, its 3rd then reverse.

I also think the syncs might be bad as well, as it has always ground when going into third, unless i let the clutch out in neutral and push it back in to get into third (only when accelerating).

Do the problems sound related?

Would it be worth it then to just have it repaired if this was the only problem?

Id have them do a thorough check on everything, only, I have bad luck, and it might be like opening a can of worms.

If i try and go 3rd and 4th right now, it feels like normal, theres a little pressure before getting the stick to where the gear is (or should be -- just like with 1, 2 and 5)theres just nothing for it to connect to.

Any other advise I greatly appreciate.

If this were a motor, itd be apart and fixed by now, but im afraid of transmissions, and I dont know how id go about getting it out.

Thanks for the info!

Well, I ended up swapping in used trans, just to save down-time.

I ended up doing it alone, on the floor, which I DO NOT recommend :p.

Cars working now, needs a clutch, and the release bearing is starting to chatter a bit, but thats in a week or so I replace that.

Just thought Id share, Im proud, i didnt think it was going to go as smoothly as it did.

workin' on j's is like shooting fish in a barrel.
