5spd low fluid question
Friday, May 09, 2008 5:01 PM
So I noticed yesterday that my friction point was damn near through the floor, so today when I got home, I checked my clutch fluid level, and the resevior was empty. So I topped it off, and I imagine that I'm now going to have to bleed the system.... The friction point is still at the low spot. Do you think the low fluid would have caused this? Would bleeding help? Any tips on how I bleed the clutch? I lent out my haynes last week damnit.

yes, you now need to bleed the clutch. follow the line down from the master cylinder, to the trans, and where it connects there is a bleeder valve. then, you bleed it just like you would a brake caliper/wheel cylinder. fill the master, pump the pedal, crack the valve, hold the pedal down, close the valve, pull the pedal off the floor. lather, rinse, repeat.

The question is....why was your fluid low??

Any leaks?? perhaps slave, or master leak??

Mystery clutch fluid leaks like to turn out to be a bad slave cylinder.

Is that pricey to have fixed or an easyish job?

Me too.

& yes, it can get VERY expensive. about $164.00 for the part & whatever you

can get deal-wise for labor to r&r the transmission. Yes, it has to come out to replace that slave....

and since you're there, there's no point in NOT replacing the whole clutch. along the same lines, a new flywheel (oem) can be had for roughly $70.

well how many miles are you at? i wouldnt want to spend any extra money unless i had to. in my case i just barely broke 50,000 so i am not concerned about mine. but if you are up there in miles it would be a very good idea to go ahead and do the clutch.

Well I'm at 220,000km, or 137,000 miles.... so if I was to need it, I'd get the clutch done while I was at it.

I don't know about the flywheel. When I did my clutch, I paid 22 bucks for it to be turned and blasted. Unless it's really wore down

But yeah, definately on the clutch. I believe the slave cylinder even comes as part of the clutch kits now anyways. I had a friend once that changed his slave cylinder, despite my telling him over and over just to have the clutch done, he didn't do it. 2 months later the clutch started slipping because it was worn out.
