ok heres my situation ...i have been TRYING to get a new NVG tranny for my quad, since my 1st and 2nd gears are getting harder and harder to go in gear...so i come accross a REALLY good deal on a 0 milage getrag online and order it....once it comes in this is what i learn....
when i got my tranny in i immediatly notice the mounting locations on the housing will not work in any way..but the bellhousing is the same..so i run the part number to see what the application is ...come to find out this perticular tranny was mated to a quad for export ONLY and contains a special gearset..as follows
3.77/2.19/1.38/1.03/.80/3.94 gearset.
now the NVG that was released in the US contained different 1st and 2nd gears...3.50/2.05 1st/2nd
all other ratios are the same......now the PLAN was to simply have the new gears from the tranmission i ordered swapped over to the case from my old tranny..so i could mount up an old case with brand new gears!!..but after talking to a few people i find that those 1st and 2nd gear ratios might not be so nice...affecting my shift points in a negative..in other words putting each shift below my power band and hense hurting my 1/4 runs...
im looking for further advice on this..should i keep all the new gears with the higher ratios? or swap my existing 1st and 2nd gear over with the rest of the new stuff while its apart? hope im making some kind of sense here...can anyone help? thanks !
I think there is a gear ratio calculator online or something. You plug in your FDR, redline, and 1st - 5th gears and it plots it out for you
damn, let me look around.

Those first and second gears should give you a great launch, however when you shift into third you will be shifting into it a a lesser mph than with the higher first and second gears that you have now. So if its give and take, get more umph on the first and second loose a little on the beginning of third because it will be at a lower rpm than with the old gears. If it were me I think Id take the chance and use the new gears.
if you plan on biulding alot of power, I say stick with those gears and launch in second
