Ok i'll explain why in a minute but can someone please tell me the difference between a flywheel from a 2.2 Ecotec and a 2.4 Ecotec. Is one a Stepped flywheel and one is not??? If so which one is stepped? That is my main concern.
Ok...i ask because i recently purchased a SPEC Stage 1 for my 03 Sunfire 2.2 Ecotec. This is my first J-=BOdy BTW. When i peeled out the trans i removed the pressure plate, disc and Flywheel. I noticed that i have a stepped flywheel. So i Send the flywheel to a great machine shop and have them turn it down for me...i go bolt up the newly shiny flywheel and install disc and pressure plate.
Now this is what i wrote to Chad @ Gravana.
When i first installed my Spec Stage 1 Clutch Kit on my 2003 Pontiac Sunfire everything appeared to be in good working order. I wanted to make sure i did this replacement correctly so i looked up the torque specification and tightening pattern for the Pressure Plate (18 ft lbs). After the pressure plate was torqued, i removed the lineup tool and everything appeared to be in good working order.
My Problem first occurred when i began to bleed the clutch. During bleeding i noticed that there was fluid leaking from the front part of the transmission (where it bolts to the engine). I figured this was just simply a bearing failure (torn boot or something to that degree). After the trans was taken back out i inspected the bearing and i can't even press it down on its sleeve. The boot appears to be in good working order.
While I inspected the Pressure Plate I noticed the Clutch Disk is Loose (it was not during installation). I removed the Pressure Plate and Clutch Disc. After a while of trying to figure out why this bearing locked up, i compared the new Spec Stage 1 components with my stock ones. The Spec Pressure Plate is Significantly shorter than my stock one.
With that being discovered, the only possible conclusion for the bearing failure is because i was sent the wrong or a defective Pressure Plate. Since the Spec Pressure Plate that i have is a great deal shorter than my stock one, the bearing had to travel further than normal to make up the difference in distance and it overextended on its inner sleeve and Locked Up.
Chad contacted me and said that Spec wanted to see some more pics of the OEM Pressure Plate because they were thinking it was one from a 2.4. Ecotec. I have a spare 2.2 with the flywheel, pressure plate, and disc still on it. However it is in my girlfriend's dad's barn like an hour and a half away and he's on the road all week.
So really i hope someone can answer me this so i don't waste a @!#$ ton of gas.
Its possible u mounted the pressure plate on the flywheel incorrectly if it is mounted wrong the forks push inword there for causing the bearing to travel further when mounted that why the u can move the clutch disk by hand that tells u something is wrong you should not be able to move the disk by hand when mounted correctly. the forks on the presssure plate should be out word as when it arrives new in the box I have done several Ecotec Getrag clutch jobs I Hope the was of Good Help To U??

it DOES sounds like possible installation error somewhere. post up pics if possible...that might help diagnose.
