Technically, according to GM, you shouldn't ever need to do this - but if you're like many of the rest of us (myself included), you'll probably do it anyway.
These transmissions specify any Dexron III ATF, and they'll safely hold 2 quarts. I changed out my original a few years ago with Amsoil synthetic ATF. After that, it seemed maybe slightly smoother shifting in below freezing weather, but otherwise didn't seem any different. Since it had been some time since I had done that (about 120,000km), I decided to change it again when doing my last oil change. As it did the first time, it came out looking clean and red just like new fluid. This time, I used some Shell Mercon V fluid, since I had it around and it says on the bottle that it can be used for Dexron III applications as well. It feels slightly different - perhaps a little "notchier" than before.
I'm sure I've read somewhere here before about B&M Trickshift Synthetic ATF being a good one to try. I may try to locate a couple of quarts later this year just to see for myself. Mine has always been tough to shift when cold. My brother just traded-in his 2002 Sunfire today, and during the entire time he had it (since new), it always shifted nicer than mine, and we never touched the factory fluid. His came with the Ecotec, where mine only has the LN2 (2200), but I thought that the trannies were the same.
You could probably use just about any name-brand Dexron III spec'd fluid and be just fine. The technical capacity is slightly less than 2 quarts, but a little more doesn't hurt any in this application.

the above ^^ is wrong. actually, the synchromesh is only for the isuzu (95-99) transmissions. the 2000+ getrag transmissions came from the factory with atf, and the service manual says to use it as well. as for the capacity, 1.8qt is so close to 2qt, that its fine.

Technicaly GM didnt make the Dexron ATF III. Just go to your auto part store pick up a couple of quarts of Dexron III and dump it in. The Getcraps take approx 1.8 Qts. so just put both in. I saw a newsletter form GM stating that vehicles designed for ATF III should NOT be filled with ATF 4, manuals included.
