98 5spd CV BOOM! Or not? Help!
Monday, May 26, 2008 9:41 PM
SOO Ive had a busted CV before (3 actually) and Today I was on my way home from dinner, make a left turn and POP car jerks a little.. whoa...touch the gass, car keeps rolling no funny noises.

Right turn, BANG jerk BANG jerk again....wtf..... car keeps going.

So get home Look under, sure enough bearing grease everywhere on the drivers side. Boot is busted closest to the tranny.

Go to th shop, Pull the CV out (and found out that its different than my spare 01 Sunfire Auto C/V's (DOH))

Well Take the Cavy axle with the busted boot apart for inspection....Hmm this is strange, No signs of binding, the "cup" is free of marks and cracks(my last Cv up broke in half)
So I check the bearings, All spin free, No problems... WTF was poping?!?!?

I am aggravated now, I kinda WISH the CV was Busted, Now I have a ghost problem!

So tomorrow Im going to pick up a boot and grease and Re-Pack the Driver CV and re-install. Ive never had a passengers CV Fail from my Air ride, but I guess its possible. Is there anyway to check the passengers CV before taking all the crap apart? If all else fails Im just gonna put the car back together and drive in circles till something breaks....so dern aggravated!!

Oh I tried to kinda check the passenger side, Put the car in neutral, Locked the wheel in each direction wtih the front end off the ground.Spun the tire by hand, Gets a LITTLE bind in a portion of the turn but nothing I have to force. However The wheel is hanging when i triend this, maybe I should Jack up the A-arm to simulate ride height?

You sure you don't have a busted diff? Rolls fine in a straight line, but binds and pops when turning....sounds like a diff.

Actually I think it did it once or straight starting from a stop in a straight line.

I just found a thread with a similar problem that was a fried tranny entirely

O noos!

Got the CV back in and drive it home(barely) So this is what I know:

Its getting worse
The car is ok untill about 1500 RPM mainly in 1st gear
It acts like a broken CV and seems to "pop" out of gear and rev up with locks of clinking and clanking.
I noticed While Power-braking and reving to force the problem, when it pops out and revs the Speedo shows acceleration.
It bucks incredibly bad.

Im ALMOST thinking it is still a bad CV, but the inner most Passenger Joint, and somehow catches and releases
But thats just wishfull thinking.

So Any more ideas? Im without a car now

Whats going to be my cost effective repair? And is there an after market upgrade? Sorry Im new to tranny work. Illgo look for a Clutch and Flywheel now....

it's not that bad just time/labour intensive.

I also concur it's a bad diff. Isuzu's suck.

Good luck.

+1

Seen it happen on my buddies sunfire that he used to have. Funny part is, when they finally let go, it always seems to do that on a left turn. But before it happened it would clunk and jerk the steering wheel real while driving in a straight line once in a while at 60mph. Also, the speedometer on his car would randomly drop out because there were so many shavings on teh VSS that it wasn't getting a good reading.

It actually got so bad that while I was following him, I ended up having to push his car with mine so he could get through left turns on the way to get it somewhere that we could fix it. Lucky for him, I'd already changed j-body transmissions and was able to do it for him rather than see what a shop would charge.

Not a safety issue. It won't be a recall unless it'll injure/kill/cause property damage.
