Clutch pedal dropped to floor?!
Tuesday, June 03, 2008 8:48 AM
2004 Cavalier Eco.

Was driving it and pushed the clutch in when I came to a stop sign. Held it in for about 5 seconds and before I could get going again the clutch pedal dropped to the floor like it lost all hydraulic pressure. Car caught the gear and stalled. Clutch isn't slipping at all, but the pedal just went to the floor and I had to use my foot to get it back up.

Any ideas on this? I'm thinking slave cylinder, but cannot find out without taking the tranny out and whatnot.

I tried to search but didn't come up with anything.

Thanks in advance.

Oh and we've already filled the system and bled it, no good.

Was it low on fluid? Is ther fluid leaking out under the car? If not I would say the clutch master cylinder.

No fluid on the ground, the fill tank had a very little bit left in there.

On a J-Body the slave and the TOB (Throw out Bearing) are one unit inside the tranny housing. In my experience when the TOB/Slave go bad they leak. Seeing as you did not have much fluid left in the resevoir, sounds like there is a leak somewhere.

Same thing happened to me. I replaced the clutch master, but the problem was a cracked slave cylinder in the bell housing. I replaced the whole clutch with the exedy GMK1000 which included the slave and now its better than ever.

Well the clutch was getting pretty beat so it's getting a new one, slave cyl and TOB. Hopefully it'll all be cleared up.

Yeah, it is also more expensve because of this....I would try to verify that it is the problem before you go throwing expensive parts at it.

There SHOULD be a rubber plug on the bottom of the tranny, pull it, look inside.....any fluid??

Does it retain fluid in the resivoir once you add it, and work the pedal back & forth?

If the fluid level dropped that tells me it is leaking, probably internally or you would see it.....so slave/tb unit sounds like a good bet....

for a stock application.....no problems. If you buy that slave from GM, you will notice the exedy logo on it anyways

I just had the plastic line from the master to the slave burst, you had to take off the wire loom to see it. The replacement line from GM is now a metal line. You may want to check w your dealer and see if there's a TSB and if it's under warranty.

I'll look into that. Thanks for the heads up.

My car's an R title so I don't know if the dealer will service that or not. But I'll look for it while it's still apart.

They should still do recalls, and items like that. Regular warranty work I dont know about.

I have heard of that line failing before also, but the leak could be found externally.

checked out the line and it is metal. apparently 04-05 got the metal line. its dry and no leaks or stress on it.

warranty work is null and void with an R title, TSBs can be done, but not free because of warranty

GM redesigned the master cylinder in 05 (so sounds like your car must have had this part replaced before.

well its all back together but apparently now the clutch is engaging but slowly starting to fade off... my mechanic seems to believe it's the master. I'm not sure though, could it just be air in the lines?
