Possible Transmission problems???
Sunday, October 12, 2008 8:16 PM
Ok guys. i REALLY need your help on this one. on friday i took a 30 mile trip to see if i could find my moms house (havent talked to her in about 5 years). on the way there. everything went great. but. on the way back i was cruising at about 75 on the highway and ever couple miles it would feel like someone shifted my car in to neutral but ONLY for a SECOND. at 75 mph im sitting at about 3K RPM and it would jump up to 3200 RPM and right back down. i didnt think anything about it for the first couple times. but. it kept on doing it and now i notice it driving around town. that night (friday) i checked my tranny fluid and it was a little low. and a LITTLE dirty. but nothing HUGE. so i added tranny fluid and all seemed fine. well. i drove it around today and its doing it again still. so my question is what could it be. bad clutches??? or i was even thinking the TQ Converter going out. also while i was sitting at a light today i went to take off and had nothing for a moment then it jerked forward and away i went. im just stumped. i JUST put this tranny in about 2 years ago and it supposedly only had 20K on it. so now it should only have around 40K but prolly less. when i got it i did a tranny service to it and it was just fine. but now. its screwed. if the tranny is bad. then say goodbye Sedan. ill be buying a Z coupe and swapping any and every part i can. and putting mine back to stock as far as possible.

Thanks alot guys

i have same problem in my wifes cavalier but i'll wait till it totally dies before i change the tranny lol. i talked to a transmission shop and they said it might be the shift sensor in it.

I had the same issue with my 2001 Sunfire. It has the 4t40e auto transmission. I decided to bite the bullet and have it professionally diagnosed. The shop test drove the car while connect to a high-end reader. They quickly told me that the TC was not bad, only slipping 24 rpm's at highway speed. Turns out the TPS was defective. It would lose .1V signal. The ecm interpreted this as releasing the accelerator pedal slightly, and reacted by going into a 'decel mode'. When the TPS signal returned to the the correct signal voltage the transmission was commanded to remain in OD, no lockup. The engine speed would temporarily increase and then the transmission would go back into lockup.

Long story short: A proper diagnosis indicated that my 'transmission problem' was an electrical sensor - the TPS. I replace that with a NAPA and no issues since. The transmission shop suggested that I use only NAPA or dealer parts, as they had experienced many problems with the discount parts stores. Hope this is helpful.
