I was sitting at a red light on my way home from the grocery store this evening when I heard this ticking noise from my engine. I was sitting in neutral with my foot off the clutch and not on the brake like I usually do and my car was reving normally, so I just figured it was a lifter noise. I guess lifter noise is common on an engine with 227k on it. Well, the traffic going i nthe other direction got the yellow light, so I put my foot on the clutch and bye, bye ticking noise. Now my question is, would pressing on the clutch remove a lifter noise and if not, what else could the ticking be?? If it makes any difference, I have a 1996 Sunfire with a 2.2 OHV.
I have the same thing happening figured it was normal
Heres some insite, If you push the clutch in, The noise is gone?. If so 100% youre clutch plate springs are worn out, Its a common thing to have happen when clutches get old. (Usually getting close to replacement time).
Good Luck.
I am having the exact problem. I put in a whole new clutch kit but the damn noise is still there.
It is the TOB (aka throw out bearing). Very common on our cars. even more common with a aftermarket clutch. Do not be concerned.
