'04 5-speed gearing

Has anyone changed their gearing? If so to what? It just seems like the stock ratio is too dragged out.

Not much out there for that, but really no need to. People have changed the gearing on certain gears (like 2 gear, or maybe first). The getrag has pretty good gearing really. 3.94 final drive ratio I believe.

All right, thanks. I was just seeing if there was a better gear ratio I could be using.

I found the specs for the gearing here on the GM Media site.

GM Product Specifications wrote:M86 / M94 (F23)
Type: 5-speed manual, front-wheel drive
Gear ratios (:1):
First: 3.58
Second: 2.02
Third: 1.35
Fourth: 0.98
Fifth: 0.69
Reverse: 3.31
Final drive ratio: 3.94:1

The final drive ratio is actually pretty good. You would need a really higher reving motor to need more gear, but the '06+ HHRs have 4.17 gearing if you want that high.

So its a Getrag F23 tranny?

Is there any way to get a numerically lower gearset for the F23? I'm running turbo and the taller gears would really help out..

There are no other gear sets for the Ecotec because of how it's set up. You have your choice of 5 different finals though

Do you know which final is numerically lowest and its application?

You'd have to ask SpeedRacer. He told me all of them at one time but I've forgotten them.

I have never heard of any different final's excpet for the 2200 getrag. The LD9 and Ecotec share the same final. I want to say the 2200 has a 3:73:1.
