Sometimes (probably %70 of the time) when i shift into third, on my 96 sunfire 2.4, the gears grind. Why is this? I don't know too much about manual tranny's so i'm not sure what can cure this. It seems like it isn't a good thing..haha
YOUR 3RD GEAR SYNCRO MESH IS TOAST.
IT'S COMMON FOR MOST MANUALS AFTER A WHILE. WHAT'S YOUR DRIVING HABITS AND MILEAGE LIKE?
PEOPLE SHIFT HARDEST AND MOST COMMON INTO 3RD GEAR. IT TAKES THE MOST ABUSE USUALLY.
YOUR OPTIONS AT THIS POINT IS TO DO A REBUILD, OR BUY A NEW TRANNY. =P

damn dude that sucks i have the same problem. except in 2nd so im shipping it off to get a rebuild and throw the tg lsd in it too while im at it. its your best option unless you can find a good deal on a rebuilt one. you dont wanna buy a used cause it could come with a fubar'd gear/synchros. and or you dont really know how much milage it has or wear and tear. could be lies. you just never know. so i would say go get it rebuilt or if your brave enough go get the tranny manual from gm and the parts you need and do it yourself. but you really dont have much options with this.

So what kind of transmission do i need to search for if i want to find a new one/ find someone to rebuild mine. Getrag/F-23? Is that what it is called?

I know now that sunbirds had the getrag 282 in them...so can anyone tell me what my 96 sunfire has for sure?
All i will say is dont buy another one unless yur upgrading to a better trans! If you have it rebuilt it will be stronger than befor , I took automatic and manual trans classes in school and they said once the tranny is rebuilt its stronger than it was befor.

Great, now what kind of tranny is it? getrag 282?
because u have the Isuzu, if u invest in another tranny, remember to opt for a new flywheel and clutch. they're relatively cheap to get compared to my 00-02 Getrag, and will make a huge difference.

How long has it been doing this and is it still doing it? For a few days in the summer shifting into third about 20% of the tie it would grind, no idea why, then after a few days it just went away and hasn't happened since. Still have no explanation why but hopefully it'll do the same for yours.
