I can go through all my gears just fine but when i shift into fith gear it grinds but it i let the rpms drop and shift in between 2000 and 1500 it dont grind. its been doing it for about 15000 miles and fith gear dont slip and has not gotten worse or better and i took it apart at school and my teacher said my syncro was fine and that he didnt think it was grinding at all because there was not alot of metal shavings. but he is a very closed minded person does any one have any ideas?
The nylon pads on the forks has worn down and not engaging the gear all the way. That has happened to me before, you can test this theroy by adjusting the shifter cables at the bottom of the shifter.
Make it so the cable that the shifter brings back to go into gear get pulled a little bit longer....pop the white plastic holders and move the holder up on the cable a few notches and try that. If the grinding goes away it the nylons wearing down. Also, this is a terminal problem as once the nylon gets worn it wears faster and faster until it's gone and you can no longer get into the gear.
I got like 3 adjustments out of it unitl I could go no further and then I had to replace the trans. Good luck.
If that doesn't fix it then it must be the syncro.
