in my 99 cav i currently have a 3 speed tranny. i have been thinking of upgrading the tranny to either a 4 speed or a manual. I looked up the manual swap and though appealing its gonna cost alot. plus alot of fabricating to go along with it.
would it be more worth it for a 5 speed or to just swap out the 3 speed for a 4 speed auto?
is there any fabrication that needs to be done with the 4 speed as far as different length axles or positioning?
any info would be greatly appreciated
both swaps require a lot of work... The only advantage to using the 4 speed is that you won't need to do any welding for the mounts (unlike the 5 speed). But you will need a different computer, wiring harness, trans mount and possibly a new shift cable and drive shafts plus other little things i forgot...
For the 5 speed you'll need to weld in the mounting bracket, different shifter assembly, shift cables, clutch pedal and reservoir, center console, plus the stuff i forgot
Its a big job either way... just depends what you want in the end
not 100% but you might also have to replace the shifter itself inside the car, along with the cover for it to go 3-4 speed

Get all the parts you need in a pile, and drive the car into it.
They will find their way into the correct places.
