New tranny/clutch/mounts in. Questions/problem.
Tuesday, May 12, 2009 3:01 PM
Just installed a used 60k transmission, brand new spec stage 2 clutch, resurfaced flywheel, and poly tranny mounts. And i got a few questions.

The clutch feels EXTREMLY light. And the engagment point is closer to my body now then it was when stock. I was expecting a harder clutch to push in...normal?

Break in is 500miles? Currently i'm driving long distance trips (150k 2 times a day) and city/regular driving on weekends. I'm planning on just going easy on it until I put on 1000km, sound good or should I wait longer?

Will the clutch feel change any over the next few days, weeks, months?

Important question: I went to the auto car wash right after the installation. and my car stalled out twice when I was sitting during the wash with e-brake on. Should I be worried? This has NEVER happened before. It was a clean stall too, very fast with no jerks. if I didn't have a loud exhaust i wouldn't have noticed.

And just if anyone wanted to know I feel a slight bit of added vibrations with the poly mounts in. Not that bad though. And the shifts feel a lot firmer now, even though im only shifting lightly.

Welcome to Spec's weak pedal feel, you'll also notice the engagement point isn't consistant.

Not sure about the car wash, do you have any loose connectors?

Not sure about the connections...Day 2 and it never stalled again, put on 340k since the install.

Yeah the engagment is a bit iffy...I actually prefered the stock clutch to this spec clutch...Will my clutch feel a lot different in the next few weeks?

And one more thing I noticed. There is a lot of vibration when coming out of 1st gear, also when i'm in 5th and decellerating it makes a constant vibration noise. I can't be sure if it's something rattling slightly in my dash or if it's the tranny, or the new tranny mounts...

Do poly tranny mounts have a break in period? As in will the vibrations calm down a bit.

I hope you are typing the wrong numbers...

150k twice a day? 300,000 miles every day? You drive around the earth10 times a day?

340k since the install? You put on 340,000 miles since you installed it 2 days ago?

I have had the spec stage 2 for over a year now also...The pedal does let out closer to the top..I injoy it for when you are going through the gears fast..you dont need to push the pedal to the floor...As far as the rattle letting off the gas in 5th gear..I have the same thing..I an sure its somthing with the clutch...other than that I have nothing bad to say about it..

Crp, so it doesn't go away eh. I was hoping it was something in ym dash that was making the rattle...

Well she's been about 3k since the install and there's a few complaints.

My engine has randomly stalled out in auto car washes, not manual just the auto one's. Never done this ebfore except after the tranny/clutch install.

Vibrations have gone down quite a bit (bareable) but still shakes bad when engine is cold.

Once or twice a day when going into first gear it clunks/shifts in hard. Not sure if it's a @!#$ up synchro or what but it's bothering me since after spending all this money everything should be mint...

Spec stage 2 clutch is decent. It grabs a lot harder then my stock one but that could just be because the stock had 160k on it...

Engagment point changes a lot, it's weird itll release up top normally but sometimes engages down low which is a bitch.

Clutch also sometimes gets a sticky feeling when pushed in.

Overall if someone is thinking about replacing there clutch I'd recomend going back to stock. Spec just isn't worth what I paid for it. And about the tranny I don't know...guess i got a @!#$ty one, but you take the chances when buying used...

well there's no synchros for the 1st gear or reverse gear... so thats not the problem, try waiting til ur at a complete stop? lol, im with ya tho, spec clutches are funky, i got a stage 3 and the engagement point changes on me all the time. The spring on the hub already popped out on me too, had to get a replacement through warranty. ill be goin with a bully stage 2 i think next time for sure

That sounds like your clutch needs to be bleed if its grinding going into first and reverse. That would also give you a garbage pedal feel.

My main complaints from my Spec Clutches:

- 5th gear rattle... for the LONGEST time I thought it was something making contact in the engine bay but eventually I realized it was the clutch. I even suspected the NVG trans. This sound is gone with my Bully clutch.
- Chatter off of the line... this was my BIGGEST beef. Nothing like the car chattering / jerking off the line from a dead stop without MAJORLY slipping the clutch out to avoid it - it not only makes you feel like an idiot, the sound itself is annoying.
- Poor engagement feel - As you've noted, the engagement point was ALL over the map, inconsistent and I HATED that it was basically an on/off switch.
- Extremely poor build quality - One spec clutch started slipping badly at 1800 miles, the 2nd one threw a spring at 2200 miles and nuked my flywheel and slave cyl.

I'd say the #1 thing I love the most about the bully is that it's not an on / off switch and I can slip it nicely off the line. Not once has it ever chattered. Thank god. Beautiful pedal feel too.

And yes, I agree - bleed out the master / slave. Sounds like you have an air bubble in there. Do a proper reverse bleed procedure.
