Where is the backup light switch?

It seems my switch has failed and I need to change it out. Any idea where it is? Thanks.

Car is a 2003 Cavalier 5spd Manual.

When you are at your car, it is above the driver side drive shaft, there is 2 wires going to it. There is only 2 plugs on the 5 speed, one for backup light, and one for the VSS (Speed)

Thanks. Can it be removed safely? Fluid won't come pouring out or is there a specific sequence that it needs to be taken out? Or is it a simple remove and install situation?

I dont think much fluid will come out, it should be above the sitting level of the oil. Worse case you will have to add a bit of new oil. The entire tranny only holds about 1.8 quarts.

Cool., Thanks. I have no back up lights and I have voltage to the harness so I figure it's the switch.....I hope.

the switch is above the fluid line , so taking it out isnt a problem

if you turn the wheel to the right all the way , and look between between the tire and the rear of the fender well , youll be able to see the switch , once you get in there

the vss can not be seen from looking in that area

I know this is a super old post... but the easiest way to get at this switch is to jack up the car isn't it?
Pretty sure I can see it by doing what 97cavie said, but I don't think I can wiggle far enough under there.

Gf's 02 fire backup lights went out, fuse is fine and the line looks to be solid all the way from lights to front, so from reading around this so far seems to be the case.
