Transmission Clack for the Experts

This is a 2004 Cavalier LS Sport Coupe with a 5-speed manual trans and 75,000 miles. (And by the way, which trans is this?)

There's a lot of noise coming from near the floorboards when in gear and rolling. Nothing when stopped either in or out of gear. No leaks. Brake calipers are good (not loose and no missing parts.) The noise is not from pressing on the clutch pedal or releasing it either stopped or rolling. I jacked up the car (yes, with jackstands to boot), started it, put it in gear and got underneath. The noise sounds like a clack coming from either the clutch area or the trans area, hard to tell which one. It is like a muted "clack" and it has a pattern: (clack-clack-clack-CLACK or clack-clack-CLACK and it varies between 3 loud clacks per cycle and 4). When I stop the passenger-side wheel there's no change. Same when I stop the driver's side wheel. I've replaced the left output shaft with a new one thinking that was the problem, but the sound is still there.

Any ideas where to look next. I believe the car has a 5-year 100,000-mile drivetrain warranty and it was delivered on 6-4-04. If it is the trans I'm hoping to get a little help from Chevy on this.

If it has warranty, why are you trying to figure it out yourself? Take it to the dealer and let them diagnose it.

My mistake on the warranty. No 5-year 100,000-mile on this one. There will be no help from Chevy.

Does it do it when the wheels are turned and you roll it back and forth? Also does it do it if you hit the brakes hard? I am having a similar issue and think its the diff bearings.

Its you differential...my brother had the same thing happen. Gotta change out the trans man. Your particular problem OEM is your spider gears..not sure on yours Gary...but the same general problem on both of your cars.

Good luck, you can find trans's pretty cheap and they aren't too bad to change out yourselves.
