Make a short shifter....
Friday, August 07, 2009 11:21 AM
ok so ive been searching the internet and reading article after article on diff forums and it seems to me that if you cut your shifter shaft below the ball and weld in a little bit extra length that it would make it somewhat of a short throw? just curious as to if this is really true?

How is that ricer? Smart maybe, as it can cost nothing to get the same thing that people with no ability pay over $100 for.

As far as you question goes yes the shifter can be lengthened below the ball and make it a TRUE shortshifter, not just somewhat. I welded an inch long extension below the ball on my shifter, and raised it up around 1/2" iirc. Otherwise the shifter will hit the floorboard. That inch made a huge difference in the throw. I work in a maintenance shop and have access to a welder and shaft material so it cost me nothing other than my time.

what's ricer about fabbing up your own parts if you have the ability? i think its MORE of a riceboy thing to do to buy a part that someone else made and mass produced.

Ricer is hacking 2" off the top of the shifter and calling it a short throw shifter.

Is it ricer to have a true short throw then cut two inches off the top?

What's funny to me is people bragging about beating Cavaliers in street races.

I dont really understand how that is ricer? I agree with ohvrolla on this one....its more ricer to buy one... it just means that you may not have the skills or know how on how to actually make stuff.....or that money isnt a concern for you....me for one am someone that doesnt have all that much and i would rather make something for the cost of the materials that i need than to go spend $100+ on something that you could make haha....and im gonna admit...i didnt know what a true short shifter was before i asked people on the forum but i am one of the people who cut and inch or two off the top to see if it did anything and it didnt so thats when i started researching and found the answer i needed...so if you dont have a money concern and just wanna go the easy way then sure go buy one...all the power to ya. But i would rather make it myself and spend the money on somthing else useful that you couldnt fab up... ALL IMO (and ohvrolla)

he's saying 'ricer' because they always like to do things un-needed to try and save money.

the fact is, b&m made a short throw. not only do you get a 'shortened throw' but you also get a billet aluminum mounting plate and billet aluminum bushings. its improves the feel as well as the rigidness. i dont know about everyone here but every cavalier ive ever driven has a dildough for a shifter.

just buy one.

yeah, the bushings are nice. to me, they are worth the price of the $55 kit. they really do alot for the feel.

Why would you risk F**king up your transmission by hacking up your already crappy STOCK shifter when you could just buy an aftermarket one?
I could understand if they didn't make a short throw for our car but they DO........

Haha you guys are really against this huh lol well i guess i can do whatever i want since its my car and i don't need all those special bushings and billet aluminium bra kets for a better feel its a dd not a show car or racecar and im not a ricer i got this car for gas i usta drive a 70 chevy pickup and i got a 69 camaro so call ricer all you want cause im not lol ill be sure to let you guys know how it goes haha

I don't understand how you could eff up the transmission by lengthening the shifter below the ball, especially considering that's the basis for getting a shorter throw to begin with. I think short throw shifters for the 95-99 Cavalier will eventually become scarce to extinct as well, and people ought to know how to properly modify a shifter to shorten the throw for when aftermarket support does run out. What would happen if all the narrow minded people who can't do anything more than bolt on a store bought part where living back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s where you actually had to know a little something to make a car make power or handle? I figure everyone on this site would be S.O.L. with a Chevy 350 or Ford 302 since they only have one cam and two valves per cylinder.

Well i bought the cheap ebay short throw shifter from a guy here on the form and i putt it in and it sucked it didn't work worth a @!#$.
So i took the billet arm and the bushings that mount to the to the floor of the car and i made them to fit on my stock shifter that was cut down. works great and it more sold than stock

As for a short throw you get what you pay for so if you do go that route go B&M all the way
mine took about 4 hours of cutting and moding to get to work you couldn't tell that is wasn't ment to work with the stock shifter

Wacking a few inches off is just going to make it sit shorter, that's all. Won't hurt a thing.

Re: Make a short shifter....

^ ^ ^ I'm suggesting welding in an inch section of 1/2" rod below the ball. Also have to raise the shifter. Can't remember if I had to do anything else to make sure the shifter has full range of motion.

Haha, +1 Rich. People stretch shift cables and bend shift forks with stock shifters. I mean it isn't like there are stops or anything under the boot. If I take a stock shifter and try to yank the shifter into the rear seat coming out of first to go to second then I'm taking a chance on effn sh!t up.

all short shifters are is added length to the links that connect the cables but if u add to much then ure gonna have to mod the u brackets the hold the cables to the shifter ill upload pics of my beautful hybrid shifter again ill say it it dont look like a million bucks but it shifts like a million bucks

if it start the next day it can be driven harder

I'm a ricer.

Here's the stock shifter on my 'yota just after I drove it home from buying it.

After a little cutting with a hacksaw and nice NRG knob, here's the result of being rice.

Btw, I didn't paint the interior but switched the factory black with some blue panels for a two tone kind of ricey theme.
I like it.

cutting the shaft down will not shorten the distance the shifter travels(short throw). only makes it(the shaft) shorter. it still has to travel the same exact distance as before, otherwise you wouldn't make it into gear.

but by all means if your just going for "that look" do it!

^ ^ ^ Go back and read some of my posts in this thread and lengthening the shifter below the ball is what I've always suggested. All you have to do is cut the shifter and weld about a one inch piece of 1/2" rod in. That and raise the shifter up so it doesn't hit the floor. I have a spare shifter I may modify in the future and if I do I'll take pics of the process.
