Torque converter engagement issues
Sunday, August 16, 2009 4:37 PM
heres the situation:
car drove fine until i went thru the burger king drive thru, then getting on the expressway, the car decides it doesnt want to engage the torque converter after 60 mph. So i got to my buddys house and hung out for a few hours, left and got back on the expressway. Ran perfectly normal until i got almost home, about 40 miles, then had the same issue. I didn't brake or anything, the converter disengaged all on its own and the rpm's jumped up to 5500. anyone have any ideas on what this might be?

You mean the torque converter clutch? If that's the case, I don't see why that would make it jump to 5500rpm. You sure you're not just losing a gear?

sorry, it was 4500. i dont know whats going on. the car will drive fine until i drive too far, then it slips out of gear and revs up. its like when you're towing somthing with a truck and you get to a hill and it downshifts to get you up it easier.

Did the fluid look and smell ok?

I worked on a Toyota Camry that would drive fine for about 20-30 minutes then it lost 1st gear and a bit later started slipping in everything else. In reverse it felt like 1st gear was engaged at the same time and it would pull to a stop on it's own. Upon inspection of the trans fluid I found that it was black. Upon removing the pan, I found lots of metal chunks. Luckily though, after new fluid and new filter, it started driving just fine.

I'm thinking you're starting to lose a transmission. If the torque converter unlocked it shouldn't rev that high. Sounds like you're dropping down a gear too.

I should have explained a little better. I just put this trans in and I filled it with new fluid, but I did not change the filter yet. The trans has 52XXX miles on it.

kinda sounds like the same issue im dealing with. went to drive it home from the exhaust shop and get it up to about 30mph and it just like slips into neutral. u can stop, park it, try it again and it will accelerate up toa bout 30mph and it will just slip out again. everyone said torque converter so i said screw it, bought another tranny and torque converter and its still doing the same thing. ive pulled mine again and put an aftermarkte converter in but ahvn't tried it yet. im starting to think its an issue with the cpu myself. doesnt seem likely that my origonal trans with 20k miles and the replacement with 50k would have the exact same problem.

i'm thinking my problem might be this:

mine is the trans slipping out of fourth, once it slips out it wont go back in.

i think the problem is fixed. i just unplugged and replugged the wires for the evap canister by the gas tank and hit it with a screw driver a few times. i'm not sure which fixed the problem, but so far i havent had any issues.
