Swapping gear ratio
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 9:12 PM
I have a 95' Cavalier 2.2. I was wanting to use the transmission from a 94' Cavalier 2.2 due to it having a gear ratio to suit my needs. I realize the slave cylinders are different but could I still use the one from my 95??? Thanks in advance for all replies.

It's the same transmission? Are they not both a 3.58:1 final gear?

I believe the transmission from the 94' has a 2nd gear ratio of 3.45. Second gear in my condition is main priority.

Uhm..... 3:58:1 FDR and a 3.45 2nd gear ratio will give you somewheres around 30mph top speed on stock tires are redline in that gear. In your case, 2nd.... which you're wanting to make it about the same as first? What is it that you're looking to do?

Yep I think both should have the 3.578 FDR and Second in both should be 2.176. That's all I've ever seen attached to the OHV.
From my research, if you get a 90-91 base storm or 85-88 Fiero it should have a 2.043 Second, or the 90-93 DOHC/GSI Storms and Isuzu Impuse and Stylus had a 2.15 Second. Only other option was a 91 Elan had a 1.916 Second. These are all isuzu tranny's. There may be more but that's what I had written down when I was interested in regearing.

Sorry, I wrote that wrong. I know 2nd gear is 2.18 and FDR is 3.58. I was told 94s and older FDR was 3.45. Right now, I am using a transmission out of a beretta and from my research the FDR should be 3.83. On the track I run way too many RPMs and the chassis dyno showed I am way out of my torque range. I can't affect this with tire size enough to do any good. Any advice is appreciated

I take it your racing circle track. I just posted the other day the gear ratios available in the 3rd gen J's and the effective gearing available through swapping the FD and using different gears, such as second and third. Read the thread here.
