I assume it is a manual car. Should like shift cables if it is a manual.

Have someone sit in the car and move the shifter, and you look under the hood at the transmission and see if both cables are moving the shifter at the transmission.

If both cables are moving the shifter then it should be changing gears. Is the shaft they are connected to (it goes inside the tranny), is it moving?

we have come to the conclusion that the shifter or the cables my father in law is going to change the shifter we messed with it and got it to go into 2nd and 4th still no reverse he thinks its the shifter what do you think. He kind of had to like shift it harder i think for it to work. Sometimes it would go into 2nd and 4th but no 1st. If you can understand that sorry if you didnt.

To me sounds like the shift cables. I had this happen to my 97. They would stretch. It got stuck in 3 gear on me. After sitting for a while I could shift, but on had 1,3,5 gears. Gears 1,3,5 is pulling on then cable and can make it stretch more. Gears 2,4,R push, well if it is stretched so far it is just pushing the stretched part.
