I have a minor leak in the trans and wanna be able to monitor its fluid levels, does the 4T40-E have a dipstick or am I SOL?

Nope, gotta check it when hot (Drive it around for about 10-15 mins on the highway) bring her back, get her up on jackstands (leave it running) and pull the check plug on the side of the trans just above the lower pan on the passenger side. fluid should dribble slightly out, if not add a little.

What a crappy design...i mean in the grand schme of things with mark up and all would it really have cost GM that much more to design a dipstick.

Think about it, unless you have a leak you should not ever have to add fluid and the majority of fluids and filters are good for at least 100k, not to mention most dealers wont touch the filter since it filters better when its dirty and has enough surface area to not clog. So when the dealer can hook up to the cooler lines, exchange the fluid externally and completely and not have to worry about it, You do not really need a dipstick...
What was retarded was the 3t40 which has a dipstick that comes straight out less than an inch from the positive battery terminal...Had more than a few kids short though the dipsticks on those..

ive seen grand ams with 4t40e's that have a dipstick...

I would never, never ever go 100k miles on an ATF fill. I do/will change religiously every 30-40k miles. It actually states in the haynes manual to change every 30 or 50 thousand miles. My grandfather (previous owner of my car) never changed the fluid till 100k miles. 20k later it @!#$s the bed. I firmly believe that the lack of fluid changes is what did it in. I use a high quality full synthetic Dexron VI ATF in my 3T40.

Severe service is 50k for the 4t40E, Keep in mind the 3T40 is hydraulically controlled, Modern Transmissions such as the 4T40E which has adaptive shift strategies and have only gotten better in the way they treat the fluid are much easier, plus the majority of the Service intervals were written before Dex VI was developed, further increasing service intervals. The 3T40 is VERY old technology and is one hell of a dog in the way it treats the fluid and its inefficiencies.
You have to take into account the fact your dealing with 20+ year old technology. In the 4T40E you are not.

lol like 15 year old technology is a whole lot better

how long has the 4t40e been around, is it a relatively new transmission or has it been around for years.

Depends on what you consider "years"
Let me google that for you...
First used in production in 95. Good god, that means the 3t40 is almost 30 years old...wow...I was a bit off on that one...

In other words, is the 4t40e something that's been around since the 80's and is just a revamped version in our cars or is the 4t40 e a relatively new transmission.
Ok, my mistake Alex, didn't see the rest of your post where you said the 4t40 has been in production since 95 my bad.
