I was accelerating from a stop light and took it up to about 5.5-6k rpm, then shifted to 2nd gear but it wouldnt go into 2nd and the shifter went limp and somehow I ended up in 3rd. So now the car is stuck in 3rd and whether I push in the clutch or not the shifter just feels limp. What I mean by limp is usually when you move the shifter around it feels like there is some resistance and feels "springy" but now it feels like there is no resistance or springiness and it is just limp.
I took apart the center console to see if the shift tower might be the problem but it seems to work fine when I disconnect the shift cables so Im guessing its either something wrong with the shift cables or the transmission itself.
Does anyone have any ideas before I take it to a transmission shop to get rebuilt?
Shifter cable is stretched or broken. I had this happen. Need a new cable.

Had the same issue myself. Shift cable broke, put a new one on and it broke too, turned out the tranny was gone and cause the cable to break.

id check the connections on the transmission itself too, the linkages might have simply come loose, other than that, ya new shift cables... DONT buy them from GM, they want 310 bucks for em
