i just installed a short shifter on my 03 cavalier. every gear is perfect except for when i back up and then try to put it in first, it sticks and i have to shove it in 2nd and 1st again until it gets into gear. its really annoying and usually only happens when i first start the car, but does happen occassionally afterwards. please help..
there was a little roller pivot ball on the left side that fell out of a hole somewhere. i dont know where it went but it looked the size of a pencil top eraser and had grease and a ball on the bottom and a spring inside of it. i didnt think it was a problem removing it because all it did was slide the shift plastic part up and down, and theres nothing there that stuck to it. i dont have that piece anymore though.

I've had that problem with my stock shifter. All I did was take the shift cables off, center the shift knob, then re-attach the shift cables. Had it on three cars now... always fixed it.
well i did that several times to center it that is why the other gears work perfect, but its just first gear that gets stuck sometimes....the other gears work fine. i know that is probably the problem with the shift cables, but i dont know how they go on right? what do you mean "Center" the shift knob? you mean just keep it in Neutral or what? got pics?

I had issues shifting down from 5th, and hard time when I first started driving it for the day...
changed the trans fluid and its been flawless ever since.

x2
That's generally the culprit for sticky gears.
Well seeing is how OP mentioned that he did install a short shifter has anyone thought maybe he needs to do some slight modding to his shifter base or other certain parts? Im having this same issue after installing my short shifter all other gears go in like butter but first seems to stick pretty good. After noticing something during the install I think this problem is remedied by shaving some plastic of the shifter base and at certain points?
