Shifter Cable
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 2:03 PM
Just replaced the shifter cable again on my 2001 Cavalier Z24. I was just wondering since I already replaced it last year, and now had to replace it again, WTF was the idiot who designed the cable thinking? There is no good insulator on them, and everything it runs and sits next to causes heat to melt holes or gradually burn it up all together! I have also replaced the oxygen censor in it twice for the same reason...No way around the exhaust! Beginning to think I will never buy another GM car! Especially full of parts made in Mexico! Does anyone know a way to fix this problem so I don't have to replace the shifter cable again next year? If any of you have ever done it, I'm sure you know how much of a pain in the *@% it is to change one. :

seeing as i have never had and issue and this issue is barely ever brought up then i think you had a fluk issue then it happened again because of improper install

if you feel that bad about GM then don't buy another one this way i don't have to worry about seeing your post like this on GM forum. go buy a toyota so you gas pedal sticks and your car crashes take your pick

^^^ This

ive replaced the throttle cable once... but thats it.... and my o2 sensors wires run no where near the exhaust... before and now after the header install...

you may want to find the factory retaining clips and run the sensor wires in them

by the way

Mine had ....a lot of miles , as some of you know.

Never had this issue.

My 95 did..... but It was my fault.. down pipe\turbo and all... ya know?

Doesn't matter on who makes the car, they all have design flaws. My 99 w/ an 04 ecotec motor and manual trans has both of my cables within 3 inches of my 2 1/4" down pipe and no issues. Similar exhaust set up. Try a header wrap. I know it collects moisture and could cause your down pipe to rot out quicker but its your call. A couple bones and a half hour to wrap your down pipe or several more bones and 3 to 4 times longer to pull out the old cable, remove the center counsel, pull back the carpet,... It's just common sense.

People can't learn common sense. You're born with it. Either you have it or you just don't!

That actually sounds kinda strange to me. Unless it's different with the automatic cars. I know with my 97 there is 2 different part numbers, but both cables are the same. Difference is that with the 2.4 5spd cars there is an insulator around the cables because the 2.4's exhaust is on the back side. Not so with the 2.2.

So either something is different with the automatic cars, or you have been getting the cable for the 2.2/2200 OHV for some reason.
