tranny.. death by speed sensor?

Okay I'm seeing a pattern here.
Issues with 98' Z24(first Z car):

1st Tranny
when I bought the car, it wouldn't move under its own power, thought to be the clutch.
Turned out to be the transmission.

2nd tranny
Found a replacement transmission out of a 96' Sunfire for it. A few months down the road the speed sensor went out on it.
Didn't really see it as a issue, was going wait for a week or two then buy one.
Well driving down the road, I hear a horrible grinding/ratcheting sound and low and behold.. the 98' claimed another Transmission.
Same issue as the first transmission.. go into gear but car wouldn't move, just make grinding sound.
Didn't think of the speed sensor being involved.

3rd tranny
Picked up a 96' Z24 with rebuilt motor and replacement transmission(guess what!? a 96!).
Owner said transmission locked up on him.. got one at a junk yard from a 96' Z24.
I bought the car Tuesday evening, with speed sensor gone out on it.
Thought it was harmless...
But by God the next night in Asheville THE TRANSMISSION DIED ON ME AGAIN!
Did the same damn thing the 2nd tranny did.
Called the guy who I bought the 96' from and told me it came out of a 96' Z24

And all transmission had the same issues:
Would go into each gear fine, when clutch released car wouldn't move just grind.
Checked clutch, all clutches were fine and in good condition
When tranny fluid was drained metal shavings were found in fluid.

Then called the guy who had the 98' Z from and told me the speed sensor was also out on the 1st tranny.

So here we are looking at 3 96' transmission that all died right after the speed sensor wen't out.
Is there a flaw with the 96' transmission or something here?

any input?

Or do I just have terrible luck with 96' transmissions?

I'm going to say the differential was already going out and pieces of metal were getting on the VSS sensor. Matter of fact if I was going to pull a transmission I'd take the VSS sensor out and look for metal on it before pulling said transmission.

I will keep that in mind.

I have to agree. Sounds like there was too many metal shavings getting up on the VSS in order for it to read anymore. I saw this on a 96 Sunfire. The speedometer would randomly drop out while driving. Shortly there after, the diff went out on it.

Is this related more to the 96 years?
I haven't heard it happening on other years as much as the 96.

Its related to the trans, not just being a 96.

Yep, the spider gears are made out of cheap pot-metal, making them brittle after time/mileage.

Life expectancy on the Isuzu trans is about 100K miles.

Here's my VSS after I pulled it out of my 98 Z24 Isuzu transmission that nearly grenaded.

Enjoy!

I have put about 30K on my new Isuzu. I dont think the car will last another 70K. Im not worried Kevin.

Short of opening up a junk yard trans and doing an overhaul, your only options are to buy a rebuild replacement (hit and miss) or get a new one from GM. I think mine took 2 days to get here from Isuzu in Japan. The new route is rather expensive though.
