Hello.
I just finished taking out my 96 Z24 MJ1 Isuzu transmission, after having almost exactly the same symptoms as the following post:
http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=41&i=42878&t=42389
And, assuming I too have an input-shaft issue, I went online searching to find where one can get parts for this transmission, and only found one site, "gmpartsgiant.com" that stocked SOME of the parts. (Input shaft of course is marked NOT AVAILABLE)
Does anyone know of a source for parts? Or maybe a cheap used source?
Thanks in advance,
Dave
The only place I know that has them for sure is a GM dealership. You have to order through them. Probably around 120-180.
Thanks Wes, I was afraid someone was going to say that.
Turns out I had the exact same problem as the post above. The nut that is supposed to be retained by the key-way had worked it's way loose and was sitting in the bottom of the end-cover with the 7 bolts on it. The place on the nut where it was supposed indented into the key-way was completely missing.
I took the throw-out bearing off, and all my rollers from the input-shaft bearing fell right out!
At least it was kind enough to get me home before leaking transmission fluid all over the place and making me pull it out to investigate.
So I'm hoping I can find a cheap used transmission locally or something along those lines. I understand that the 2.2 transmission (MK7?) has the same guts, and can have it's internals swapped, so maybe I'll try that, since there seem to be a lot more 2.2 trannys around than 2.4's.
Thanks
Dave
Yea, that is true about the internals. Try looking for 90-94 guts out of any Isuzu 5 speed (sunbird, cavalier, geo storm, isuzu stylus). The storm and the stylus DOHC transmissions came with a 4.11 final drive. I don't know if you want to go with those or not, but I did and couldn't be happier.
The 90-94 transmissions have forged/machined spider gears, where as the 95-99 have cast only. So you can imagine they are much stronger. And the synchros are better too.
I replaced my bearings, synchros and seals with a kit from here:
http://www.drivetrain.com/
Cost me about $300 for the parts, and I installed everything myself.
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
Thanks for the replies, guys.
My only worry is the case was damaged from all those pieces slopping around in there, but when I've got it fully apart and can inspect the damage fully, I'll know for sure..
Thanks Wes for the info about the compatible trans, and thanks for the link, Transporter.
Well.
Whoever had this car before me was not kind to the transmission.. Besides the input-shaft bearing that disintegrated, the spider-gears are severely pitted and missing chunks, in addition to one of the bearings on the diff being REAL worn out.
Unfortunately the bellhousing-half of the transmission is unusable, which really sucks because I found a '91 Geo Storm transmission, in reportedly good tested condition for $125 about 25 miles away.
Wes, I noticed that you're local.. I'm about 10 minutes from Great-Lakes Crossing.. Know anyone with any usable 2.4 tranny bell-housings?
Not really , but car-part.com allows you to search for a part that is local. It is where I find a lot of stuff usued. There a quite a few junkyards in SE Michigan.
