On my 97 Sunfire LD9 Isuzu 5-speed.
I was planning on setting it up as an AutoX car that get dragged raced some times (since theres no real race track around here) and I still hanvt got to changing the suspension because of my tranny issues.
2nd gear went out (would work if reved matched) and I finally figured out a bad shift cable caused it when it snapped, so I replaced the cables, and it got better but it was to late. I since Put a $400 junkyard tranny in the car and all was good for awhile, but now the 2nd gear synchro is going again.. Im kinda baffled on this.... It could be that the old tranny was just going out but its a big coincidence.
Sometime in the future Im planning on just putting a new tranny in the car but I dont want 2nd to go out on that too.... I'm starting to wonder if my actual shifter is worn out and it isnt moving the (left right) shift cable enough or something..
Im hoping a new shifter (inside the car) along with a new tranny (still has the new cables) will fix the problem but Im scared to put the money into it not knowing...
Anyone have any ideas WTF could be causing this?
Any help would be really appreciated.
Sounds like you beat the @!#$ out of it to me

Having bad shift cables will more than likely not cause your synchros to wear out. The synchro sleeve is either on or off, for the most part. Typically two things cause synchros to go out:
1. Driving hard and/or downshifting by forcing the trans into a lower gear without giving it enough time to match the speeds
2. Tons of miles.
Or a combination of the two. I enjoy beating the piss out of my car, but I always double-clutch downshift (aka properly rev-matching). So I figure it equals out, haha. If the transmission blows on mine though, I wouldn't be surprised. I am willing to pay the price for driving it hard.
I dont shift it hard like that.... and I rev match out of habit now. When I put the salvage yard tranny in it I babied the thing because I didnt want it to go out, but it did anyway.
It is MUCH worse down shifting. If I upshift slow it doesnt do it, but I have to rev match it below 30mph downshifting for it not to grind.
Its like its cursed or something.

THIS, THIS, THIS!!!!!
isusu's are junk, man. they might be able to take the power load decent but the syncro's are just flat out JUNK.
i did this to my first getrag... i ended up chewing the dog teeth on gear 2....
i'd like to find something stronger but i hear nothing is offered besides crylo treated gears (and that wont help the synchro nor the dog-teeth issues)
Ya know, the tranny in this car is the #1 reason I stopped modding it. I wont put any more cash into a car that has a problem like this. Ya know... I love my sunfire but Im seriousley considering calling it quits with J-bodies in general because Im not gunna hop up this car anymore, and If I get something else to hop up it isnt gunna be a Cavalier, or a FWD car at all.
I hate the transmission in this thing.
weebel... trust me... an NVG T550 is your friend.
paul has been beating on his for well over 3 years now, shifts beautifully and has never had sycnro issues.
We all need somebody to believe in something...
Dont you have to cut and re weld mounts to do that swap?
where can one purchase one of these transmissions you speak of? lol

If it is for your 2200, you can forget it. The NVG bellhousing is for a 2.4 only. It will not bolt up to a 2200.
SH*T, that sucks monkey bawls... lol. any other ideas for the 2200 tranny?

The only thing you can do is upgrade the internals from a 90-94 Isuzu trans.
so i can take the internals from a 90-94 xmission and put it into my 98?

Yup, everything but the shift rails/forks as far as I know...
Out of curiosity- what fluid are you using?
You arent putting gear oil in instead of GM syncromesh are you?

Now with northstar V8, IRS, 20's n 22's

The early internals are much better. In fact, I have never heard of one breaking personally.
