4T40E Won't go into 1st gear unless 1st is manually selected

Hi All,

I am using a 4T40E along with a PCS TCM2000 Transmission Controller.

When the car is in D it can only select gears 2-4 electronically, 1st is unobtainable even when using manual gear selection on the TCU via a laptop. You can only successfully use 1st gear if you physically select 1st on the shift lever.
Is this a problem that has been seen before as I have tried 2 transmissions and they both show the same symptom (also tried 2 different TCM controllers and looms to elimninate that as an issue)?
I tested both shift solenoids on each gearbox and the resistance is good and you can manually engage\disengage them with a clear click noise as they are engaged so don't think these are the problem (also if the solenoid which controls 1st was faulty it would also affect 4th).

Many Thanks,
Mike

Had the same problem with my Hyundai back in the day, it was equiped with a performance/economy mod selection for the tranny.

My Drive gear (auto) would not engage unless I manuely shifted into first the back into drive.
Found out the the tranny filter was clogged and the fluids were not getting through quick enough, also it ran dry once when I bottomed out and cracked the tranny pan.
So I would check your fuilds durring operation with the help of a friend. If its not that then your TCU is just bad, unless your tune is messed up and thinks it is a 3T40 that would exsplain the lack of a gear option via your tuner
just check the specs on your unit and make sure you got the right unit.

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply, it appears that it is working ok once back on the ground (couldn't try that at the time as there was no suspension on the car). I think that the 2nd gear clutch pack\belts create enough drag to override 1st gear when the wheels are off the ground in D unless you physically put it into D1 (which is probably physically shutting off 100% of fluid pressure to the other clutch packs\bands). I'm very new to auto trannys as vitually all tuned performance cars in the UK are manual so there is very little knowledge available.

Thanks,
Mike
