I hate putting up a new post when I've seen it on here somewhere but I have a few questions. F23 M86 tranny ( as subject states) always shifted harder into 1st, 2nd, 3rd gears and now a slight grind into 5th. 5-R synchro, bent fork, plastic slide on the tip of the forks? Did the eco swap last August. Always had a wine from what I thought was the diff, which I presumed was from the hit the donor took on the passenger side (pushed frame rail tight up against the block. Destroyed alternator, A/C comp., bracket between block and upper mount, tensioner, control arm, knuckle, half shaft). Now I'm not so convinced that's where my noise was coming from. 2 tranny flushes within 500 miles after the car was on the road. Average amount of debris the first flush and clean the second.
Any ideas? Found 1 hit on ebay for a reman for $400. Junk? Does come with 2yr./24,000 mi warranty. Would like to keep my old tranny and make it bullet proof or near bullet proof. Any ideas on where I can get the parts other than the clutch, LSD? Is it ever worth it for when I do my engine rebuild down the road and boost it?

I guess that would make sense for the above average effort to shift. Another thing I forgot to mention is its kicked out of 5th 3 times now. Once on a country road and the other 2 times on the express way. It doesn't really want to stay in overdrive at higher speeds. I'm thinking maybe synchro.

popping out of gear sounds more like shift fork tips.
FU Tuning
Well its starting to slightly grind into 3rd gear maybe 1 out of every 10 shifts. Whether its synchros, 1 to 3 of the forks being bent or having damaged tips, or the diff whining and maybe throwing metal shreds throughout the entire tranny, its done for. I'm going to do a gm parts # reference on the f23 m86 tranny I found new on ebay for $400 and possibly get that. I still would like to put together a near bulletproof tranny but cant seem to find the gear shafts or forks anywhere. Any ideas?

Is there a different in locations on the transaxle cases for the mounts for the F23 M86? I believe I seen something for the cobalt ss/sc but I think thats the F35, if I remember right, but what about the regular cobalts, ions, hhr,...?

Make sure the shifter cable bracket on the transmission is FULLY SEATED on the transmission. There is only 1 bolt holding that shifter cable bracket to the transmission. The bolt is M8 x 1.25 x 40mm long. I swapped out the OEM Torx M8 bolt for an M8 x 1.25 x 40mm Stainless Steel Socket Head bolt. GM has a service bulletin out on the Getrag F23 M86RPO that mentions shifting problems into 4th/5th gear. They recommend replacing the entire output shaft assembly, which means pulling the transaxle out of the car. As long as the shifter cable bracket on the transmission is fully seated like it's supposed to be, and the shifter assembly inside the car properly mounted/secured, adjusting the shifter cables so they actuate all of the shift levers inside the transmission means unclipping them from inside the car, the same thing you would be doing anyway if you were for example installing a B&M Short Shift Kit.
There are different locations for the shifter cable brackets for the Getrag F23 versus the F35; even though the internals might be swappable the case configurations are in fact - different.
The Helm manual for the transmission is GMPT05TURM. It is called '05 Transmission Unit Repair Manual. Cost is $50.00, mine came to $66.72 with shipping/handling. All the information you will need to diagnose, repair, rebuild a Getrag 5 speed transmission is in this 2 volume set. It's worth the investment.
Thanks
