My shifter is loose when in gear on my 2001 5-speed, 2200. Is this simply a stretched cable problem or has anyone had trouble with the cheesy plastic ball and socket at the bottom of the stick under the boot?

Yeah its that grey plastic piece which the shifter sits in to. Those always wear out. GM put a bunch of cheap plastic parts in those shifter assemblies. I think a whole new shifter assembly isn't that expensive from the dealer.

had the same prob to. but two days ago i put a short throw in and the o ring that sits on top of the ball was kinda out of place also to check the the arm that is used when u go side to side. the insert can be bad. i replace that littl einsert and redid the o ring using the stock pivoit housing and its nice and thight.
