I just replaced them in my 04 cavalier. I just unbolted everything and bolted everything back. Is there some adjustment that I need to do or something I have forgot to do ?

Not sure what you are pointing too. I just replaced the factory cables in mine with more factory cables. The only thing that I could find was somebody saying don't break this piece in a picture and the picture was below these words.

Leaves you with a very bare shifter base

But I don't see anything or am I blind or not looking at the right pic ?

in clip the forward and backward cable from the shifter itself, pull the level back slightly then reclip into place and see how it feels. Repeat as necessary

In the post where he was grinding away excess metal from the shifter base he said that if you don't remove enough metal that certain parts may hit and not allow you to shift

Quote:

Now we mark off the top of the shifter base and let the sparks fly. Make sure you have yourself a good grinder/dremel. They say to take off 5mm of material, which is fine on the two sides, but the front/back close to the mounting holes you want to take off as much as you can, I'd say at least 7-8mm. I dont have a picture to describe it, but when the shifter moves front to back, the ends of the pin holding the pivot to the shifter arm, come extremely close to the shifter base but doesn't touch. I lucked out and had just enough room. Probably why ppl complained of not being able to shift into certain gears, didn't remove enough material and the shifter would hit.

I just replaced factory cables back in the factory shifter. I shouldn't have to grind anything away.

I called the dealer and he faxed over the instructions with pic on how to adjust it. I still couldn't get it to work so I drug the car to the dealer. I turns out the used cables I got are busted( I thought I heard a snap when I putting them in) so now they are going to fix it. New cables are ~$160 and Labor is ~$300.
