clutches blowing up

Ok, so i have a a 98 Z wiht the LD9, and isuzu tranny, and this is now my 4th clutch that has had the springs blow out of the hub. Its not tranny play, because we replaced the entire tranny last time this happened a year ago. What could be causing this? i want to eliminate the issue before i throw another few hundred dollars into a clutch.

also, whats a good place to get a good stock replacement for a good price

Are you breaking in your clutches right on just beating on them right away, you should wait 3000 miles after you replace the clutch to break it in, i put a clutchmaster stage 2 clutch in mine and never had any problems, but when i do need a new clutch i will go with a luk clutch

3000 miles is a bit excessive, most aftermarket clutches recommend 500 miles of going easy on it.

It does sound like you're beating on the clutch though.

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.

I am breaking them in properly, i set my trip odo to 0 and wait til it turns over to start being hard on it now and then.

I do drive slightly harder than the average person, but not to the paint where the clutches should be falling apart. I should emphasize that they arent just like, coming loose.... the whole hub basically explodes, i have a picture of the old spec if you guys wanna see haha

I found the root of your issue.

You said the word Spec. I was about to ask what manufacturer you were using for a clutch and you answered it in your last post.

I have gone through 3 specs... all less than 3000 miles on them. All broken in properly. TWO of them had hub springs explode out of the cage. The last one I pulled had the spring pop out and score my custom flywheel badly... spec of course won't cover squat. Two other springs on that plate were almost out, the cages cracked and bent. The car had 2300 km on it... or 1400 miles. Upon inspection of the pressure plate vs my Bully the difference was astounding - the bully has the cage over over 70% of the spring and it's a thick piece... the spec had tiny little tabs holding in about 20% of the spring. These tabs break off and the spring blows out of the cage/pressure plate and you get boned by Spec.

The cage design is garbage, just like their friction plates.

I've had a stocker for 30k miles - no issues. A luk for 30k miles, no issues. A Bully Stage 4 for 5 k miles - no issues.

But I couldn't get a spec to last a few weeks past proper-break in.

Move on to a better manufacturer, that's my advice to you - unless you like to drop your trans every 8-15 weeks.

Thats the thing, i went through 2 specs, switched to a stock replacement and figured it would fix the issue... it just happened again after 10 months of the clutch being in :/

You blew a spring out of a stock replacement? Did the cage break?

You said there is no trans play - what about the input shaft?

have you you resurfaced the flywheel at all?

180hp in 1989 or 145hp in 2002, you decide. >
