Insert Type LSD - Who has racing results?
Friday, June 04, 2010 7:10 AM
Hi everyone. I'm currently upgrading my Cav to only used as an autox or track car. I really wanted a Quaife, but couldn't find one for a decent price. Question is, who here has used the TG/Phantom Grip style inserts for actual hard autox or track use? Do these provide a noticeable improvement? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Also, what ever happened with that OBX LSD people were talking about a while ago? I know they seemed inferior, but are they worth the ~$300? Anyone try those?
Thanks

the team green insert doesnt seem to like paul's slicks much. but it is set up to drag race pretty good. it could also be getting old... its been used for like 4 years now.

Fetter has an OBX LSD in his 550+hp Cav and it seems to be holding up fine the last I heard

I just made my own, soon to be installed with short ratio gears, a 1 piece synchro swap and a stronger diff. I just got all the pieces together as of today so hopefully I'll have some testing results soon.

I'll be hitting the 1/4 as soon as the built tranny is in.

Get me the dimensions of your diff and I'll build you an LSD insert for you for much less than $300.

We have a TG Lsd insert. Its does ok with slicks and 440 hp. We have been cutting 1.8-1.9 60's. I just dont know how much more it will hold. We are throwing a OBX lsd in for this season.

I'm listening for more info on the OBX ones. I'm torn between the insert or the OBX. I just don't know if I'm able to trust those cheap OBX ones

why do you say 'cheap'? OBX is a well trust name in plenty of other automotive brands, especially the honda world. the only thing cheap and junk they make for us is their LD9 intake manifold, every thing else they make for us is ok from what i can tell. just rip-offs from other companies LOL

but anyways, if fetter's car uses the OBX and it works perfectly fine for it i dont think its junk...

Just the fact that it is like 400 dollars for a LSD? I can't remember what/where i found it, but someone on a forum tore one down and compared it to a qualife. They most of the same design, except some of the bearings were replaced when the guy tore it down. And the OBX was made out of a softer material than the Qualife. Just things that I have read.
I'd love a full LSD, rather than an insert.

just because something is cheap doesnt mean its 'cheap'.

OBX is cheap. Cheap price, cheap quality, all around cheap. I am from the Honda world, OBX is not well trusted. Trust me on that one.

They are often assembled incorrectly, it is generally recommended to disassembled the LSD and make sure there the washers are installed correctly, all the helical gears are installed correctly, there is nothing inside, and there is no metal burrs that have to be removed. They generally have poor runout as well. However many people have used them and had success but the quality control is horrible and seems to have gotten worst in recent years.

Some things I have seen with OBX lsds:
metal burrs inside
washers installed incorrectly
large pieces of spiraled metal still attached inside due to (I'm assuming) very dull blades used during machining as well as the worst looking machining I have ever seen.
helical gears installed incorrectly
a piece of wood inside the lsd

I'm sure there are more horror stories than that. I bought an LSD and if I could have cut the price in half by buying an OBX I probably would have.

fetter is running the OBX however he took it apart and rebuilt it completely before installing it

IDK if he did that or not. When i talked to him he didnt have time so he threw it in. I will check with him though.

The turbo cars trans is coming out soon for the lsd, I will take some pics of what the diff looks like and post them up to see how the insert is doing

When the same thing is made by another company that has better reviews, it does. OBX is cheap junk.

Exacttttttttttlyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. OBX can get the job done sometimes. It is not up to the standards of Quaife. If you don't think OBX is cheap, obviously you haven't done enough research on them. I have! And they are cheap.

I've been on the Honda/ Acura forums and they don't have good reviews of the OBX at all.
I've read more bad reviews about the lsd than anything good.

Btw, what's the Quaiffe's cost anyway?

Good to know and it's an option depending on how far I want to continue to go with the car.

well well well . . .

i have alot to say on this topic, ive had open, welded, team green lsd for me . . . same results going down the straight 1/4 track. To summerize here ya go:

BURNOUTS LAUNCHES
open diff: possible one wheel burnouts possible one wheel launches
team green lsd: way better chances of 2 wheel burnouts more consistant launches
welded diff: garenteed 2 wheel burnout poss chance of torque steer launch on wheel spin

in summery when i had my F23 i really liked the team green lsd setup, cuz it aloud you to turn without wheel/axle bind and 2 wheel burnouts, so yea let Brian know i gave him props

Hows it going Ben? Long time no see! Thanks for the props!

Out of over 500 LSD's sold, and not one single "Bad" review post, only sold by word of mouth (well, no official advertising), I let my insert speak for itself. Is it a Quaife? No. Does it do its job? Use the "Search" button to find out (search the trans forum and the Member Registries for "TEAM GREEN" or "T/G" in the mods section.... )

on the same note, I only have a few inserts left...... still undecided if I'll continue offering these.

Please oh please offer more! I want to be in the Team Green Insert club too!
F23 without Team Green Insert = lose.
