i have a 2002 Cavalier LN2 that has a little less than 215k miles on it, and to my knowledge the trany hasnt been replaced.
So in the beging, finding a car for me i have wanted a 5 speed, i didnt get one...
but now since i might be replacing my transmission soon, i thought it might be a good time to get that ol 5 speed i was searchin for...
or maybe not...
What im lookin for is mostly the price...
well hell if its even worth it, then the price...
what i need....

Auto to 5 speed isn't a simple bolt in swap. You need to remove the automatic body mount from the frame rail and weld in the 2 5 speed body mounts. You also have to measure and drill a precise hole in the firewall for the clutch master cylinder, install a clutch pedal assembly in the car, install the 5 speed Shifter and cables, new axles, new flywheel, and new clutch.
There is probably more that I'm forgetting.
Quick estimated price list:
Transmission.$350 from junk yard
Flywheel.$150
Clutch.$300
Shifting cables.$100
From frame rail mount from Ttr.$80
Rear frame rail mount from gm.$120
Shifter.$50 junk yard
Master cylinder.$175
Axles.$100 each
That right there is $1,425.
Would technically be cheaper to buy a 5 speed car and go from there.

Around here at the pick and pull you could get the trans, flywheel, cables, shifter, master cylinder, slave cylinder, and axles for about 210 dollars. So that plus 200 for the mounts or 100 if you cut the rear one from the junkyard car plus the clutch comes to about 6-700. Plus it can be cheaper if you shop around for used parts in classifieds. Or you could go the doner car route as mentioned above.
Or you could do as I did with my Isuzu to getrag swap and find someone who had all the parts and get them for a ridiculously low price.
It all depends on your location and people you know.

I did mine this summer and it really isn't as hard as everyone makes it out to be
I payed 240 for the tranny with the clutch and flywheel ( Craigslist )
80 for the center plastic shifter ssembly ,clutch pedal with the master cylinder, the shifter with the cables ,and they even cut off most of the front of the frame where the mounts are. Really the hardest part was welding and trying to find new flywheel bolts
Ad most ppl say u need to change yr computer to see how fast yr going ect.ect. but i had conected the 2 bigger purple wires from the main plug of the auto tranny and it worked

anyone have any information on wiring related to the neutral safety switch? I know there is a difference inbetween the wiring to an automatic tranny and 5spd tranny (one connector I believe?), but i'm unsure what until I get the service manuals.
i'm going to have a headache when I pull the 2200 auto and put in a 3400 getrag, I just know it. glad I can weld and solder though
BTW, are there different ways to wire the neutral safety switch? as far as I understand it, a wire is grounded when the vehicle is in neutral which allows the starter to then work. I was reading a post where a guy wired it up to his clutch pedal, and the starter would only engage when the clutch was pushed to the floor...but tapping into that wiring is a bad idea with a remote start system. Rather than the viper system pretending the clutch is on the floor and completely ignoring the gears, id rather have it check to make sure the vehicle is in neutral and not in a gear. I have a viper 2way alarm, 5902 (the color pager one) that calls for wiring the neutral safety switch. I simply grounded it now in my automatic (seemed like overkill to wire it up right now, as the vehicle is always placed in park whenever I stop)
