I recently replaced a flywheel on a chevy s10 and had the transmission out to do so. When i got all finished i bled the clutch and put new fluid in the transmission but now it shifts hard. At first i could not even get it in gear and the more i drive it it seems to get better but it is still hard to get it in gear or reverse. Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Did you fill it with the correct fluid?
its an old concept. time for something new to take the reigns. - Z yaaaa
Got it from a local mechanic in town here he has a 55 gal drum of it, its what he uses in everything he does.
So the answer is no. Replace the fluid with what GM recommends.

Sounds like the clutch isn't bleed completely, and i wouldn't use the stuff from the drum.. brake fluid absorbs water.

Thats what i thought so i kept bleeding it. I ran an entire quart container through it now so i would think it is bled ok. Plus i can hear it workin.

The fluid is what he uses everyday in cars that he does and never had any problems with it so im pretty sure its not the fluid.

So, that doesnt make it the correct fluid. The FWD Izuzu 5-speed that GM used take a special syncromesh fluid, the 5-speed getrag in my 03 takes Dex. 3 ATF. If the fluid is too thick to fit into the clearances in the tranny it will cause it to shift hard.

I didnt say it made it the correct fluid. All i am saying is that it should work fine. It is like anything else there is what the manufacturer recommends and there is other brands that will still work. GM may recommend a certain type of tire too but does that mean some other brand wont work?
Your transmission requires synchromesh, not gear oil. Gear oil is much thicker and will ultimately cause your trans to fail in one way or another.
Well I did this for my uncle and it is deff a beater truck not worth much at all so i dont think he is going to be up for putting more money into it at this point (i know its not that much but belive me). So aside from the oil does anyone have any other ideas of what it might be? He has no problem with it and doesnt really think its that bad but i am just curious what it could be.

Other brands will work, but not as well. Very few people have had success with using fluids that were not what GM recommend. Drain the tranny and put in GM's Syncromesh fluid.

change to the correct fluid before you have to shell out $1500 for a new trans. Spend the $30 for the correct fluid and stop being stupid.

I'm not normally so blunt as others, but use the damn correct fluid. Also make sure the intake air temp sensor is functioning and plugged in.

Like i said this is a REAL beater truck it was a big debate whether to put the 100 dollars in parts that it needed into it. If it were me i would spend the 30 dollars and put new fluid in it but ultimatly its not my truck and i just went with what he bought me to put in it.

Well then it will be a wasted $100 when his cheap ass wastes a transmission. It will continue to be hard to shift and have other issues because you put gear oil in a transmission that requires synchromesh. Beater or not, being a cheap @!#$ is no excuse for ruining a good part. My truck is a beater, guess what I put in the transmission and transfer case when i replaced the clutch??? Thats @!#$ right, synchromesh in the trans and AFT in the transfer case. Do you know why? Its the correct fluid for the application. You dont @!#$ put gear oil in a trans designed for something MUCH thinner. Might as well put gear oil in the engine on the next oil change too. Bet it turns over slow too.
Sorry for the previous comment, but its been a long frustrating day and people being cheap where they shouldnt be is one of those things that irritates the hell out of me.

haha i totally understand and i feel the exact same way most of the time. I am someone who always spends the extra money to have something done right so it annoys me doing work for him a lot of times when he wants to save a dollar or two.
For the luv of Bejeeezuz, drain the tranny fluid and put in synchromesh. It's 8 bux a quart at Advance Auto. And you'll need 3 quarts, max.
