Is it the 90-93 Storm SOHC or DOHC transmission I need for a new diff? Mine took a huge dump today, and need to fix it asap.
DOHC for sure, I'm not sure about the SOHC but the DOHC is where I got my diff from, and the one piece synchros.
Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
Simple as removing rear cover, 5th stuff etc correct? I don't have to take the input and output shafts off to get the Diff out correct?
You have to pull and completely dis-assemble the transmission, the diff is the last thing to come out.

Bah, I wonder if it's just easier to buy a used G5 GT and put the old car to rest
Oh also, is disassembly of the Geo Trans similar to ours then? I found one locally really cheap (<$180). I guess I should get the car home first and pull the tranny apart to see what other damage I might have. It shifts fine, but when going around corners, and sometimes even straight, feels like the whole front end is bound up, popping etc.
Yeah they basically come apart in the same way.

I assume the parts I need are inside the "differential" not the "differential" itself corect? I was quoted around 800-1k for a local transmission shop to replace them, but with what I would consider a better part (even with 140k Miles), and way less, it would seem better to do it myself no? The Geo's spider gears are Forged and the Stock cast correct?
If it's just spider gears you need then yeah, those are inside the diff and require pressing a small pin out, and then removing the larger pin that the spider gears run on.
One thing I've learned from fixing transmissions though, is there is never only one problem. One problem leads to other problems. And you might as well replace all the bearings, seals and synchros while you're there. A rebuild kit is about $300 from Drivetrain.com.
Assuming you have the tools, it's much better to do it yourself, as long as you're mechanically inclined. And if you don't have the tools, just think of how many you could buy with that $800-1000 you're about to give a transmission shop.
And yes, the stock spiders are cast, the Geo spiders are forged and machined.

Biggest problem is having said tools as well as a "shop". I might be better off having them do it, I hate to say that though.
