I have an 04 cavalier and out of no where I have lost all forward gears. Any ideas? Linkage is fine. I am thinking of throwing a used one in for now.
Are the shift control arms moving on the transmission when you move the shifter?
Yeah, I watched it move as my wife moved the shifter. You can hear the engine engage or lug down when I put into any forward gear but when you hit the gas there is nothing. Reverse works fine.
Could be a differential as well. Forward the teeth could be stripped but there may be enough when its spinning in reverse to catch.
Chances are swapping in a used low mileage one will be the cheapest bet.

could be torque converter.or do you have reverse?. maybe a band or clutch isn't engaging. do you know what trans you have? 3t40 3t40E??
