Already searched...couldn't find a definitive answer.
As the title states I have a 98 2200sfi 4spd auto cavy that I'm looking to boost. Just wondering if I should even bother as I'm not interested in swapping tranny's. I see that the bottom end will hold 200+hp with the right tune...but what about my stock 175,000 km (110,000 Miles) tranny?
I am not sure what numbers the 4 spd can handle but one of the biggest killer of autos is heat, look into a good sized tranny cooler, not sure if they make a shift kit for them or not but another thing to look into. Stock trannys slip to provide smooth shifting/also creates alot of heat, with a shift kit, the tranny with have more firmer/quicker shifts and reduce heat aswell. Maybe a higher stall torque convertor will help too, not sure?

Skilz was around 300whp (ld9) and I believe Bonnet was slightly over 300 (l61). As far as I can remember, neither had upgraded internals either...just a Yank TCC and trans cooler. You should be fine.

Btw, to the OP, I was at 303 for 2 years, just a few track plasses though. I have a Yank stall with upgraded various internals along with an lsd, and a tranny cooler. If anything, make sure you get a cooler

from all the research ive done.....the stock 4t40e should be ok to around 350ish but if it were me i would at least do a tranny cooler as well as a converter
mine wont be stock for long so i cant tell ya how much it will hold....looking to push close to 450 out of mine come fall

Yep 350 is what I have heard as well, but like you guys mentioned WHO really has pushed the 4SPD AUTO that we know of much over 300hp? Nobody other than us mentioned. Who's to say what number is right ya know. If mine breaks at 400hp, then I will be doing a 5 speed swap lol

well... do we know how much power acer was pushing? he was running 12's on a 4t40e...
also, i remember jeremy (skilz) bragging about how he beat the ever livin ish out of his over the years and it was fine. it ran low 13's all day long boosted.
and then there is the 11 second SMG drag car, which well... had a fully built 4t45e so i guess we really cant count them but its in the same realm!

i would argue those power numbers but regardless thats a 4t45e thats "Fully build race prepared " so that goes against the fully stock ? that is being asked in this thread
B.o.t i would say as long as you have clean cluid it in and decent cooling you should be able to hold 400 in theory but no one that i know of has attempted it on a fully stock transmission

I thought I heard of an S10 making close to 400whp before completely destroying his 4T40E. I can not remember though. I wish I could be more helpful but my tranny doesnt fit the bill as being "Fully stock" or anywhere close to that.
Transcooler would be a great investment to any one running an automatic.

According to GM the max engine torque is 200 lb ft for the 4T40E and 215 lb ft for the 4T45E. May not be the answer you're looking for, but it's something to consider.
330whp is plenty to go 11's with that weight. they just used every ounce of it, thats all. it comes up perfectly for the weight and WHP made on the 1/4 mile ET calculator.
