I have been doing research on the F23 Getrag and I just need some things clarified.
I have a 2001 Cavalier 2200 SFI w/ the F23 Getrag.
As far as I know the F23 Tranny has been used on the 2.2 OHV as well as the 2.4 LD9, right?
Is the only thing that's different is the bell housings?
Lastly if I go to the junkyard to get another F23 for my car , How can I tell its the right one for my car rather then the F23 for the 2.4 LD9?

All 5 speed j's from2000-05 use the f23 getrag. The only difference is the bellhousings so you can just swap them and your good to go.
Oh Ok. How hard is it to swap the bellhousings?

Ok. My last question is....Are there any specific markings on the bellhousing that are only on the F23 2.2 OHV?
I am sure the 2200 bellhousing has a different part number or something on it, but can't tell you cause I don't know. If you find another car with a 2200 at the junkyard, then your set. If you find a 2.2 Eco or a 2.4 Ld9... take it home and swap YOUR bell housing onto it. All cavaliers and sunfires from the year 2000 and up that have the 5 speed will work.
2200 belhousing is like a trapezoid shape 3 bolts up the fron 3 bolts up the back its the eco and 2.4 that are similar

To clarify, what about the F23s that are in per say an '06 cobalt? As far as I am aware, the bell housing on the 2000-2002 J Body with the metric 60* v6 pattern should also bolt up. I just wanted a confirmation on that. Sorry to hijack the thread, been searching here for a couple of days and wanted a definitive answer. Thanks!

The f23's from cobalts have a different casting and use different tranny mounts.

The mounts are unimportant to me as I will be fabricating them, however, are the casings different enough that the 2000-2002 bellhousing will not bolt up? I am just trying to get a material list here. I have an 06 cobalt trans but would rather use the case than swap the inturnals. thanks!

To give you a better idea where I am coming from, I have a 287 out of an 06 Cobalt with low miles. I would rather use the stouter case. I Intend on using the 2200 metric bell housing for an L67 swap into a Fiero Instead of using the 282. The F23 is a better transmission for my intended uses and I have no intentions of using an adapter plate. The F-23 in particular is new to me so I figured the best place for information on this application would be here. Furthermore, I always liked the J body.
I'm aware of the modifications to make the hydraulics, mounts, and cables work. everything work with the exception of concrete confirmation that the Eco Housing trans can swap the bell or not or if I should just swap the internals. Lastly, I've not yet had a chance to do any research here on the clutch, pp and flywheel configurations you fellas have found working well for the L67 swaps. So if anyone has a chance to enlighten me, feel free. I will be searching anyway.
I would like to begin mocking up my swap here in the near future considering another project will be getting buttoned up soon. I appreciate any additional comments and thank you in advance!

What most people are failing to tell you is the bellhousing is part of the case half. Your best bet is to find an F23 from a 2000-2002 J body with the pushrod 2.2.

It still swaps over just fine.
If your dealing with a J.

So you need a new tranny for your LN2 right?
Get another F23 regardless if it is for a LN2, or LD9.
If it is for a LN2 just swap it in as is.
If it is for a LD9 pull your tranny out of the car, then split the case, and then splet the case on the one from a LD9 put the LN2 bellhousing on the new tranny and put it in your car. bam done.

Interested in the Fiero project! My dad has a '88 Formula, just finished a 3400ohv swap, and bolting up a turbo setup. Depending on how his trans holds up, we might do a F23 (or F40) trans sway in the future.
