but i didn't want to hijack that thread.
I have a 2001 2.2, 5 speed manual.
I am currently stuck in gears 3 and 4. i removed the center console, uncliped the side-to-side cable lock, and the shift mechanism works perfectly. when i recenter and lock the cable back in, no side-to-side movement. It feels as if the cable is completely bound.
what i need to know, is how do you get the cable out completely? i can't figure out how to get it unattached from the shift mechanism or the trans.
when i try to operate the side-to-side selector on the trans itself, it is jammed in place. i need to get the cable off to see if it will move, or if i'm looking at a bent shift fork or something worse.
I inherited the car from a cousin who though the clutch had gone out. i guess he heard a "pop" while trying to shift in to first at a stop sign, and lost side-to-side movement. car has been sitting for 2 years until today. had it towed to my house to work on it.
thanks for any help.

The cable should popped off the transmission, I usually take a flat head and put in and twist.
But trully you should be able to move the shifter (at the tranny) regardless if the cable is connected or not.
FU Tuning
well, got the cables off. the actual shift mechanism on the trans is bound. i have 3/4 and with some force, i can move it out to get 5/R.
No 1st/2nd though. Got the bolts out of the mechanism, but not enough clearance to get it out. looks like i'm gonna have to drop the trans to get at this one. Guessing my 1/2 shift fork is bent or completely broken off in there.
side question: how do you get that nylon bushing out of the up/down shift lever on the trans?

Ever any progress on this problem? This sounds somewhat similar to my current transmission issues.
