Feeler, Lightweight Aluminum Flex Plate, Automatic 4T40E / 4T45E

To make a long story short. I have been in talks with a local machine shop to produce / make me a light weight flex plate for our automatics. The problem is the price. The "ring gear" that engages the starter is very expensive. Does anyone else in their right mind want to get in on this. It is still VERY early in the design phase. We haven't made any chips yet... The flex plate assembly in quantities of 10 seems to be around $500-600. $300 of that being the damn gear.

I highly doubt anyone will really want one since most higher HP and crazy NA people all have 5 speeds, but just throwing this out there...realistically. The product is like 6-8 months out....if not a year or more.

The company I'm working with use to make some of the corvette flex plates for Fidanza and Spec. There also, probably be an option, to buy it with new ARP hardware....or possibly be included, but that is a fair way off at this time.

Anyone have any thoughts?

lol you know id be down.

thing is though... i never noticed the stock flexplate to be very heavy... how much lighter we talking here?

also... could we just cut the welds on the stock plate's ring gear and use that? sort of like a core type deal.. send you the stocker, you cut the gear off, attach it to the new plate, and done.

This would be interesting. I'm just wondering what kind of power it can take and if possible get it for a different non-J motor?

I do not need one, but, how smart is this?

Reason I ask, is I know a car with a mild build that ripped a stock flexplate.

i think if it were possible. it would be better to have a smaller diameter tq converter with the bolt holes that extend past the body so they line up with flex plate. and a higher stall rate. but thats just me thinking. its probably not possible.

I would be interested in making lightweight steel flywheels for 5 speeds

Are the.auto flex plates and the flywheels the same diameter? Why not get with.spec or fidanza and see about getting replacement ring gears from them to use on an aluminum flex.plate.
