How close is too close?
Wednesday, July 13, 2005 6:39 PM
i finally got my wheels and tires on, they look awesome and i will post pics later tonight. I do however have one concern. When the wheels are turned all the way, in either direction, there is only about half of an inch between the tire and the inside of the wheel well. is this ok? or should i remove the wheel well lining?

one more thing, i notice alot of vibes from the tires when i slow down or gently use the brakes. is this normal?

When I turn my 18s all the way I touch metal inside the fender with the tire. I just try not to turn all the way. As for the vibes. Did you use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts? Also, did you get hub rings with the rims?

hub rings:yes
mr tire: installed them, not sure what they used

the vibes feel almost the same as when th abs brakes engage, except the brakes work fine

Maybe you need to send them back to the place that mounted them and tell them that you think the balance is off on the rims.

Sounds like warped rotors. Did they use an impact gun to tighten the lugs?

Ask them why they used an impact gun, since the excessive torque could warp rotors, damage the wheel, break a wheel stud, or any of the above.

Insist they tighten by hand, and torque to specs with a torque wrench.

^^really, i hate hand tightening. impact wrench has never warped my rotors(which i didnt think was possible in the first place)

I had it happen on my non-j-body. Before impact gun, braking was smooth. After impact gun, braking pulsated. I loosened all the lugnuts, and hand torqued them to specs, and the brakes still pulsated. Other attempted "fixes" did not work. I eventually replaced the rotors, and braking was smooth again. So, for me, no impact guns on the lugnuts.

its not only when i brake, its whenever i slow down i.e. letting off the gas

do you think it could be normal tire noise/vibe? they are big

two questions:
if what you are saying is the prob, is it ok to ride around liek that for a while?

about how much would new, stock size rotors run anyway?

It has been 3 days. Go get it fixed already LOL.
Almost imposible to warp a rotor with an impact gun. It can happen but since your rotors are not red hot when you take your wheel off and by the time you put them back on you really should not have a problem.
That is also why you are supposed to tighten in a star pattern on 5 lugs and 4 lugs.
You also can't use an impact to tighten a lug. You only use them to snug a lug up to a rim and then you torque them down.
The more I see it most likely is a warped rotor but I would go to the tire place and have them check your balance as well on your rims.

if i go take the wheel/wheels off real quick, is a warped rotor something i can clearly see?

The guy at the shop said they would need the car for a few hours, and i wont have any time for that untill liek wednesday.

...stock size rotors from advance auto/ pep boyz/ etc. are, like, 20-50 bucks each, bendix being their "better" brand. save a few more bucks and get a set of powerslots...they are only a couple of bucks more, and will look a lot better, maybe increase performance a little. go ahead and get some nice pads while you are at it. (axxis metal masters, etc.)
