Hey everyone, time to change the stock tires on my 97 sunfire - 205/55/16 and im thinking of getting the Kumho 712's for around 90 CDN or 75 USD. Is this a good choice, has anyone had any good/bad experience with these tires? Also, is it worth getting 215/40/16 and having the spedo/odometer adjusted? or should i stick with stock sizes? also how much is it about to have the spedo adjusted? Thanks alot.
215/40/16 will look so @!#$ stupid you'll regret ever buying them. get either 205/55, or some people like the combo of 225/50. kuhmo's have excellent wet and dry traction, yet tend to wear a little faster than other tires. getting the speedo adjusted is probably gonna cost you a lot of time and money to have someone do it. why the hell would you want low pros on 16's anyway?

ive got 225/50/16's with kuhmo 711's and love um
the size you want is way to small
there good but you will have sidwall flex in them... and a bubble will develope on the sidewall eventially mine has
Thanks everyone for your replies - for the people stating that they wear out quickly - what kind of driving and how many miles have you put on it?
I've had my 712's for about 7500 miles and the wear on them is fine. I use them for autocrossing also(about once a month). My driving style isn't very hard on the street and most of those miles are highway.
I just got the Kumho 712's in 215/50/16 for my stock Z24 16"(TireRack). It's not too wide for the rim, sidewall height is well under the +/- 3% rule, and it's a size that is not avaliable in many models and brands. The dry grip is, of course, much better than the stock Goodyear RSA but I can't say anything yet on wear or even wet grip - hasn't been raining much in Hawaii lately.

I have the Kumho Ecsta 711, 215/45/17, on my daugther's 97 Cavalier. Personally I feel the Kumho tires are noisy. I wouldn't buy Kumho tires again, not happy with them.
BIG BOOST
i had kumhos on my other cars. i would also say they where noisy, but they lasted me long enough. i recommend kumhos to everybody who is on a budget.
red 99 coupe.... no rust and it runs.
I just got some new rims with 225/40/18 supra 712's on my cavy and well they grip awsome. Only had them on a month so there is no wear on them but they handle great on my car and have awsome traction.
hopes this helps
712 is a horrible tire. Save a little extra money by buying 711 or Hankook equiv. Both tires work well, and are cheap to boot.

When I get tires for the 17's I ordered, I am getting Yokahama AVS Db .
The Kumho 711's on my 18s have treated me good, foronts are worn from my driving when im pissed and stuff, but the rears are still almost new, its a dailiy driver, i like cruising and had them since late april/early may.. overall im happy with Kumho
On the other hand....you have other fingers.
i had lots of toys when i was young.slinky,etc.but once i found my penis, that was all she wrote
Dont ever buy 712 unless there is no other choice and desperately need rubber!

I have the 711's and I love them. Great in the rain and great in dry weather mine have about 5000 miles on them and they still look brand new. You'll love them don't worry.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
I recently got Kumho 712's in size 215/50/16. Drove though some deep puddles at pretty good speeds - cut through the water without any hydroplaning at all. Much better dry grip than the lame Goodyear Eagle RSA's.

On my Sunfire GT I have the KUHMO ECSTA Supra 712 Tires 225/50/R16 92W
Excellent Dry Traction
Excellent Wet Traction
Decent Tread Wear
Poor Winter Traction - *Warning* ABSOLUTELY NO TRACTION AT ALL ABOVE 20 MPH.
Great for Summer use, though.

if you're looking for a budget tire, there's a lot out there for less than 75 bucks usd. i got my tires (futura HR II) at pepboys. $270 for 4 tires, mount, balance, tax, fees. they're quieter than the stock rsa's, as far as i can tell they have better dry traction, they've only been in the rain once, but i felt safer than with the rsa. i don't know about tread wear...supposed to be good though. i've had them about 2000 miles and i'm happey with them.
if you're just looking for a decent tire that won't break your wallet...search around for a good week or so and check everywhere.
GO PATS!!!
I have the 711's... should have gone with the 712's since my driving style is a little more aggressive than the 711's are suited for...
Dry is as good as my old Pirelli Assimmetricos... not quite as good as the Direzionales. They're soft, but NOWHERE near as soft as the Pirellis.
They're awesome in the rain... totally SUCK in the snow (leave the car at home).
Wear has been great... I'd heard of a lot of people complaining about premature tire wear with Kumho's, but I have them on both cars now... and I have no problems at all. (but, I know my alignment is good, because I had it checked
)
I've got over 40,000 kms on the 711's right now... but the fronts are going to need to be replaced soon since I keep spinning them with the GM S/C
Yeah the 711 is a little more street oriented I would say than the 712. 712 has @!#$ty wear characteristics. If you want performance, go with a set of Ecsta MX.. A lot more $ but a lot more tire. Its what my 240 gets...
