Rims in winter
Tuesday, December 27, 2005 7:57 PM
Ok so for christmas i got new rims. There 17 inch black with a chrome lip and a 40 offset. I want to put them on so bad but I dont want to mess them up. My stepdad is trying to convince me to put them on but im in love with them and dont want the winter to mess them up. Does anyone else around maryland still have their rims on?

I dont live in Maryland, but from what i do know, the salt will eat at your wheels. I dont recommend it. I would wait till spring. reasons why i love living in texas. No snow.

The salt will mess them up, just keep them off until winter is over.

You shouldn't have a problem if you keep them clean. I have never removed mine for winter.

its not worth it though. especially since he has a polished lip, the salt will eat that up.

I'm in Indiana... I have never left mine on in the winter. I always clean them and put them away. If you drop that much money on rims and tires then why risk it. Salt, sand, and ice are not a good thing for an expensive set of wheels. Also, most tires that I have seen for rims, at least around here, aren't snow worthy anyway. I keep em on in summer, back to 14" steelies every winter. But that's just my opinion.

Everyone says that the winter is so bad for your rims. I think as long as you have proper tires on it dosent matter what they're mounted on. If you want em on, jsut make sure you dont have summer tires on them

no salt does eat the finish on rims.

Salt DOES eat the finish on rims. I have seen it first hand. A friend of mine had some silver rims on his accord for 2 winters... by this past summer they were chipped and eaten to hell which was caused by nothing more than the salt. They aren't even worthy of tires, he went back to his hubcaps. Rims and salt don't mix: But to each his own.

ya, i left my old chrome rims on for 1 winter, and when spring came, they were destroyed. pitted everywhere, just a mess. my suggestion is to wait.

i honestly think it depends on the rims, if you have a polished rim or a chrome rim, i definitely wouldnt drive them in the winter. If you have a non polished or chrome rim it wouldnt be a problem as long as you kept them clean.

^^^ this is true but most rims have a clear coat on them and the salt will eat that off. so if it isnt polished, it will eat the clear off anyway and later down the road you have a chace of ruining the rim still

just like car paint if you put some kind of paint sealant on a rim that is painted or has clear coat, and clean at least once a week youll be fine. my rims dont have clear coat so they stay off in the winter. if your polished lip does not have clear coat they will be destroyed

The only way I would leave them on is if you were going to wash them everyday haha. And most likely that isn't going to happen.
