widest tire on stock rim

Since I'm on a very tight budget, I'm going to be keeping my stock 15" rims, and I want to put the widest possible tire on these rims for the best contact patch possible. Right now I run 205/60/15 Eagle GT HR, but they're getting pretty worn so I'm going to replace them in the spring. I was wondering if 225/50/15 will fit without much trouble, or if I need to go with something narrower. I know they will be shorter than stock, but that's not an issue to me. Also, if I'm going to be adding Tein Basics at some point, and with a full drop of 2.5", will there be any issues with rubbing on the tires? I did some rough measurements and it seems like I should be ok, but since I'm going 30mm wider than stock with no extra back spacing or offset, I want to be sure.

A 225/50/15 with fit but its almost an inch shorter than what you have now. It will mess with your speedo a little and you milage will be off. Most only use that size for drag racing.

I already did the math on the tire size, that's not an issue to me. My only concern was the width. Besides it's only a 2 or 3 mph difference, and I can have the speedometer recalibrated to compensate. And as far as highway engine speeds, there's not going to be much of a difference, maybe a few hundred rpm higher than normal. But I'm going to be doing autocross, hopefully this season, and having the shorter tire is much like having a shorter gear ratio. The acceleration and contact patch I will get is worth the higher RPMs and speedometer issues to me. And I have a second set of steelies from another Cavalier I use for snow tires. I can put the normal tires on if it becomes a problem.
