Can someone make this simple?

Ok how do i figure out what numbers mean when looking at tires? what do the xxx/xx/xx stand for all i wanna know is how do i determine a real thick tire to a real thin tire? i want 17x7 and i see this deal and it says the tires that come with it are 205/40 R17 what does that mean also?

xxx/xx/xx stand for this -- tread width/aspect ratio r rim diameter

(first the technical, then the simple)

Using 205/40 r17

205=tread width in millimeters (how wide the tire is, this would be about 8")
40=Aspect ratio (how high the sidewall is as a percentage of the width... in this case it would be 40% of 205 = 82mm or about 3.25") -- aka 40 series tire
r17 = Rim diameter... or a 17" rim

A 205/40r17 will have a smaller sidewall than a 235/40r17 because, even though the percentage is the same, the tire is wider...

You actually want to go with a either a 225 or 215/40 r17 to maintain the overall diameter of the stock tire. (keeps the speedo accurate)

205/40/17, 215/40/17 or a 225/40/17 are all too small for our cars. you want a 215/45/17 or a 22545/17

yeah I was gonna say that also, 215/45/17 or 225/45/17.

R17
R is Radial from the days when there was Radial and Bias. You had a choice. Before R it was steel belted.

So are you saying that you have finally mastered the fine art of the button or are you being a braggart about how you mentioned to Mr. Bautz that he search for his answer? You are not being too clear as to your intention.

no the thing is you ask stupid questions that a simple search or a look in the faqs would explain. this however is a slightly (well for you way more) advance question then what you ask. the only reason i posted in here was because the wrong infomation was given out and i wanted to make sure it was corrected before he purchased the wrong size tires. you ask the most stupidest @!#$. hey where did you get this or where did you get that. how do i take off a shift knob? when they answer is right in the faqs which you choose to ignore. you need step by step instructions with detailed pics of the most easiest of things. i understand your new to cars but your lazyness isnt going to get you far. i say search because im sick and tired of people asking the same question and looking to be spoon fed info because they cant use the search button properly.

205/40/17's will fit but your speedo will be off and the tires will be like rubberbands, making it a rough ride.
