Loose Wheel?
Tuesday, February 27, 2007 8:31 PM
From the rear passenger wheel on my 96 z24, I hear a wobble or loose wheel sound. I checked to see if the wheel was on right, and it was. Can this sound be coming from a bad rear drum brake? Has anyone else experienced this problem. Your input would be gladly appriciated!

iv had a simular prob before. I check to see they were fully mounted tight, and they seemed like they were. I took it to a mechanic and he said it WAS loose. He just tightend it up. I can't say u have the same prob. but make sure with the tire iron just in case.

Just looking at it does nothing, there's not much to see. 5 lug nuts and a wheel.. loosen the nuts, jack it up, take the nuts off, take the wheels off..

And while you are there take your drum off and look inside, wiggle the hub around to see if it's loose, if everything checks out put the wheel back on, put the nuts on snug, lower car and tighten lug nuts. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THEM, in other words, don't crank of the 4 way as hard as you can. Seat the lug nuts and give them maybe half a turn, that's all it needs.

Edit: Upon further thinking, half a turn might be too much. Give it about 1/4 of a turn.

Did you actually check to see if the nuts were tight, or did you just visually inspect? If you thought the nuts were loose but didn't take a minute to check them with a 4 way then your crazy..

Not everyone has a torque wrench, they are expensive. That's why I told him a good way to do it if he doesn't have a torque wrench.

true...but what i should have said is maybe take it to a garage after that and have them loosened and then torqued...over tightening can be as bad as under tightening sometimes...i install wheels and tires for a living thats all...hate seeing wheels put on without being torqued

I do the same thing as well. That would be his best option to have that done after tightening them.
