widest tire on a 17x7" wheel?
Tuesday, April 03, 2007 6:04 PM
Just wondering what are the widest tire you would go with on a 17x7" rim.. i know of some people doing 245/40/17's which is what i want to do ..but let me know, i need as much help as i can get as i dont plan to run slicks at all and hitting 10psi instantly tends to light my 225/45/17's up no problem in 1st and 2nd gear... i know it wont solv it all but i also like the look of the wider tire too...

245/40 would be a little wide for them, but if they fit then I say do it. What good is all that power if you can't put it to the ground?

A 245 tire is just under 10" wide. It will not fit well on a 7" rim. You need to go to an 8" rim for the 245. You may be able to get a 235 on there, but even that I would go with a 7.5" rim. You want the tire to both seat properly at the bead, but also for the tread to sit as flat as possible. Otherwise the wider tire won't actually be doing you much good.

I wouldn't go any wider that 225/45R17 If you want tires you need to go up to 8"->8.5" wheels then you should be able to fit 235 and possibly 245's(depends on tire manufacturer).

just egt better tires rather than wider. the compounds of the tires make a huge difference in traction. get a better performing tire rather than a cheaper and wider tire.

Then you should stick to the 225/45 and get a better tire as Whitegoose said. You'll be better off with that than a larger tire on the 7" rim.

yea for sure... as i read on the BFG site thoughs tires they suggest rim widths of 7.5" to 8.5" or somthing like that so your only going to be .5" off of what they suggest... which isnt bad

Once you've had Falken RT-615's you'll never want anything else

$112 a piece 225/45R17. This is the tire I use for STS in autocross, and I'd be hard pressed to find something better.

Hey Josh, you have a 7' wheel. You CAN put a 245 on it, but you will have a lip... meaning the wheel will be "caved" into the tire. If you ant the rim to sit flush with the tire sidewall, then you want a 215. I actually prefer the tire to stick out just a little. For a 7' wide rim the "optimal" size is a 215, but I would go 225. Trust me on this one. as far as your aspect ratio goes, I assume that since you are running 225/45 ur not rubbing. however, looking at your pictures ur fenders are sitting close, so remember when u have the tire size 225/45/17, the 225 means width the 45 means the aspect ratio which means 45% of the width. that is how big the sidewall goes. So natrually the wider the tire, the bigger the sidewall. ITs not that big of a difference cuz the measurements is 225 mm. and 45% of 225 mm isnt that big. but 45% of 245mm adds more hight to the sidewall. So going with a wider tire could cause ur tires to rub. Just keep that in mind. With your drop and a 245 tire, you might have to drop to a 40 series tire.
